Yesterday Syria held a referendum on a new constitution
The main difference between the adopted constitution and the current one is the change in the article, which earlier established the predominant role of the ruling Ba'ath party. From now on, the political parties of Syria are guaranteed equal opportunities.
The first official counting data will be published today. It should be noted that for the first time in decades the counting of votes is controlled by the judicial authorities, and not by representatives of the ruling party.
Interestingly, the Minister of Information Adnan Mahmoud announced in advance that the Syrians voted for democracy, pluralism, social justice and the preservation of the most important gains. He believes that the new constitutional draft is only one of the links in the reform program that started a few months ago. Mahmoud added: "Today, the Syrians are voting for the country in which they will live in peace and harmony for the next years under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad."
The opposition earlier called the referendum a “political game” and called for its boycott. The United States considered the plebiscite “a meaningless step,” and the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Guido Westerwelle, said that “a falsified vote cannot contribute to a way out of the crisis,” and called on Bashar Al-Assad to begin the transfer of power (RBC information).
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in turn, appealed to residents of major Syrian cities, military and businessmen to overthrow Bashar al-Assad. Clinton said: “The longer you support the regime and its campaigns of violence against your brothers and sisters, the more you score your honor. Support your fellow citizens, countrymen and women - and you will be welcomed as heroes! ”However, the state secretary stressed that an operation like the Libyan one in Syria cannot be done: foreign military intervention will only inflate the flames of civil war.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia believes that the referendum is "evidence that, despite the difficult security situation, the Syrian leadership fulfills the promises made to the people to implement profound political and socio-economic transformations."
According to official information, the referendum was relatively calm. But in Homs and other cities, clashes between the armed opposition and the army and police continue. As human rights activists point out, more than 100 people died last Friday.
