In Georgia, a monument to those killed in the Great Patriotic War
On the waterfront, workers build a fence around the monument. They say to journalists that they are only instructed to fence the monument.
However, the decision to dismantle the monument was taken by the Batumi city council as early as July 2011 (the Russian peacekeeper reports). The city authorities explained this decision with a project to build a cable car. The monument was promised to move to another street (information "Izvestia").
It should be noted that this dismantling is not the first time that Georgia gets rid of the legacy of the Soviet past. The dismantling of the monument to Stalin in Gori, produced on the night of 25 on June 2010, was widely known. But now we can speak about the consistent elimination of monuments dedicated to the Great Patriotic War (this is noted by Politkom.ru).
“Free Georgia” - an opposition party - expressed its protest in connection with the work on dismantling the memorial. The leader of the party, Kakha Kukava, interviewed by a GTimes correspondent, told how the government is trying to erase the truth about the Great Patriotic War from the people's memory, in which the Russians and Georgians fought side by side with the Nazis.
Kukava said that, unfortunately, this is not the first time that monuments to soldiers of the Great Patriotic War have been dismantled in Georgia. In December, 2009, the authorities blew up a monument in Kutaisi. That explosion turned into a tragedy - the girl died. “Monuments were part of the Georgian stories- said Kukava. “Instead, the authorities implant other values.”
