Western media deliberately distort the real situation in Syria
During a press conference held on February 24 this year in Moscow, the deputy said that Assad’s possible departure was an artificially contrived situation. After talking with him, which lasted three hours, Pushkov did not get the feeling that Assad was ready to leave, since there is absolutely no reason for that.
Speaking about his impressions of a trip to Syria, Pushkov noted that the Western media created a one-sided picture that emphasizes the tragic, negative sides. In this regard, there is a feeling that the political regime of President Assad is under siege, and the majority of Syrians opposes his rule.
According to the head of the Duma committee, in fact the situation looks different. He acknowledged the existence in Syria of a serious internal confrontation between confessional and ethnic groups. At the same time, according to the deputy, the regime of B. Assad is supported by large sections of the population.
Pushkov said that when visiting Damascus there is tension, but it does not feel that “the city is on the verge of civil war or it is constantly shaken by some internal conflicts.” A.Pushkov added that the daily life of the city “looks normal and is not broken.
Speaking about the situation that has developed within the opposition movement in Syria, he noted that it is on the verge of a split. Most of the discrepancies, according to Pushkov, arise on the issue of a referendum on the adoption of a new Syrian constitution, which will be held 26 February this year. He stressed that now in Syria there is no cohesive center of the opposition, speaking on behalf of the protest-adjusted groups of the population.
A.Pushkov added that the State Duma will continue to study the real situation in Syria and will continue to work on a peaceful settlement in this country.
