Another American LCS Omaha has successfully completed acceptance tests
This shipyard left Gabrielle Giffords of the same type this month, as previously transferred by the Navy Coronado, Jackson, Montgomery. They are based at a base in San Diego, California. Soon they will be joined by Omaha.
A number of ships of the Independence type are currently under construction at the Austal USA shipyard: Manchester is preparing for factory testing scheduled for the summer, the Tulsa ship was baptized and launched, Charleston is awaiting the baptism and launching ceremony in the fall. Cincinnati, Kansas City, Oakland and Mobile are built in the early stages.
The construction of the LCS series is carried out by two main contractors in alternative projects. Type Independence is a trimaran. The hull is designed according to the SWATH principle (a ship with a small cross-sectional area on the waterline). The base for the project was the 127-meter high-speed car-passenger ferry-trimaran "Benchihigua Express".
Independence-class ships are 127,4 meters long and 31,6 meters wide, with a displacement of 2,3 thousand tons. The speed is up to 47 knots, the cruising range is approximately 4,9 thousand miles. It is armed with a 57 mm cannon, four 12,7 mm machine guns and a launcher for 11 Evolved SeaRAM missiles. The board accepts two MH-60R / S SeaHawk helicopters and Drones.
In total it is supposed to enter into the Navy of the country 26 class ships LCS. The criticism of the program is caused by weak armament of the ships, its high cost, problems with the power plant (over the past 1,5 year four ships of the LCS class went to repair due to the failure of the propulsion system).
