Public assessment of military service in Russia - according to VTsIOM
21 February VTsIOM presented the processed data on how citizens assess the state of the country's armed forces, what they think about army reform and what image of the army has developed in Russian society today (in detail: http://wciom.ru/index.php?id=459&uid=112514). All-Russian polls of VTsIOM were conducted in 2011-2012. In total, 1600 people living in 138 settlements in 46 regions, territories and republics of the Russian Federation were interviewed in each case. A nationwide VCIOM survey was conducted in August of 2011. 2200 respondents were surveyed from 138 settlements in 46 regions, territories and republics of the Russian Federation. The statistical error in all cases did not exceed 3,4%.
According to the data received, today the inhabitants of Russia highly appreciate the activities of the Russian army. The armed forces approved 52% of respondents. For comparison: the level of approval of the activities of parties, the judicial system and trade unions did not exceed thirty percent.
First of all, the armed forces cause a feeling of respect among Russians (35%). (For comparison: in 2008 year - 29%). In addition to respect, respondents feel a sense of hope for the army (27%) and pride (26%).
If the son or grandson of the interviewee chose the profession of a military man, 44% of respondents would approve his decision. By the way, this indicator is higher among those respondents who have served in the armed forces (51%).
According to the overwhelming majority of the respondents (78%), the army gives the young man a useful life experience. 74% of respondents expressed the conviction that a real man must serve. Interestingly, 70% of youths who have been drafted are convinced of this.
At the same time, more than half of respondents (55%) are sure: there is no real military threat for Russia now. The rest indicate as a source of potential US military threat (13%), Canada (10%), less often - NATO countries (4%), Japan or Georgia (3%). Russians are convinced - in the event of a military threat - that the army is capable of protecting the country (55%).
At the same time, respondents had conflicting opinions about the military training of the Russian troops. Some (30%) see positive trends here, others (also 30%) see negative trends. Still others (29%) see no change.
The level of equipment of the Russian army with modern types of weapons and equipment more than 2 / 3 Russians rate as average or higher (68%). Young men of pre-conscription age (80%) give a high rating more often.
The majority of the respondents know about the reform of the Russian armed forces (68%). Conversions in the army 67% of respondents believe necessary, although, however, 55% believe that they are insufficient.
To increase the readiness of the inhabitants of Russia consider it necessary to equip the army with modern weapons and appliances (72%). Such measures as the increase in money allowances and social guarantees for officers (40%) and the introduction of advanced training programs for the commanding staff (43%) are also considered appropriate.
Exactly 4 / 5 participants of the research conducted by VTsIOM consider it expedient to introduce CWP into the school education system. Interestingly, high school students (67%) also hold to this position.
