India buys 100 self-propelled howitzer K9 Vajra-T
Previously, such large-scale contracts were not concluded by private Indian companies operating in the military-industrial complex.

K9 Vajra-T is an option SAU K-9 "Thunder" the South Korean company "Hanwa Techvin", modified according to the requirements of the Indian military.
In January 2011, a tender was announced for the supply of self-propelled tracked howitzers. Four potential sellers participated in it - BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Ltd) in partnership with the Slovak “Konstrukha”, “Tata Power” (Tata Power), “Larsen and Tubro” / “Hanva Techwin” (formerly called “Samsung” Techvin ”) and Rosoboronexport. The first two companies dropped out of the tender before the start of the tests, which were carried out during 2013-2014. In the final, Larsen & Tubro / Hanva Techwin competed with the K-9 Thunder and Rosoboronexport with the upgraded NPK Uralvagonzavod JSC to the 155-mm / 52 standard version of the SG 2C19 Msta-S located on main battle chassis tank T-72.
Larsen & Tubro bypassed Russia thanks to its favorable price offer, becoming the only bidder for the supply. It was approved by the Government of India Security Committee in March 2017. In April, L&T announced a contract with Hanwa Techwin for the production of the K-9 Vajra-T.
It is expected that Larsen & Tubro will begin assembling the first 10 howitzers at a factory in Telegaon, located near Pune, Maharashtra. At the same time, the main production is supposed to be concentrated at the new enterprise in Hazir (Gujarat state), which has a modern test route and is able to provide the entire production and handover cycle. It is planned that the share of Indian components in the installation will be about 50%. Apparently, among them are the corps, elements of the turret and 14 of the main subsystems, in particular, the fire control system, the ammunition supply system, the artillery ballistic station, the collective defense system, the auxiliary power unit, and communications equipment.
The Indian version of the K-9 "Thunder" will have a mass of 47 tons. Howitzer will be adapted to the conditions of the desert. The basic version is equipped with an MTU MT881 Ka-500 V8 engine with 1000 horsepower, an Ellison transmission and is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 67 km / h, a range of fuel - 360 km, mobile ammunition - 48 ammunition. Calculation of installation - 5 people, including the commander, driver, gunner, assistant gunner and loader. The ACS is capable of firing three projectiles within 15 seconds that will hit the target simultaneously (firing mode MRSI). Maximum combat rate of fire - 6-8 shots / min. for 3 min., standard - 2-3 rds / min. In one hour. The firing range of the SAU is 8-40 km, the range of fuel is 450 km. The steel armor case protects against armor-piercing 14,5-mm ammunition and splinters of 152-mm ammunition.
