India buys 100 self-propelled howitzer K9 Vajra-T

K9 Vajra-T is an option SAU K-9 "Thunder" the South Korean company "Hanwa Techvin", modified according to the requirements of the Indian military.

In January 2011, a tender was announced for the supply of self-propelled tracked howitzers. Four potential sellers participated in it - BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Ltd) in partnership with the Slovak “Konstrukha”, “Tata Power” (Tata Power), “Larsen and Tubro” / “Hanva Techwin” (formerly called “Samsung” Techvin ”) and Rosoboronexport. The first two companies dropped out of the tender before the start of the tests, which were carried out during 2013-2014. In the final, Larsen & Tubro / Hanva Techwin competed with the K-9 Thunder and Rosoboronexport with the upgraded NPK Uralvagonzavod JSC to the 155-mm / 52 standard version of the SG 2C19 Msta-S located on main battle chassis tank T-72.
Larsen & Tubro bypassed Russia thanks to its favorable price offer, becoming the only bidder for the supply. It was approved by the Government of India Security Committee in March 2017. In April, L&T announced a contract with Hanwa Techwin for the production of the K-9 Vajra-T.

It is expected that Larsen & Tubro will begin assembling the first 10 howitzers at a factory in Telegaon, located near Pune, Maharashtra. At the same time, the main production is supposed to be concentrated at the new enterprise in Hazir (Gujarat state), which has a modern test route and is able to provide the entire production and handover cycle. It is planned that the share of Indian components in the installation will be about 50%. Apparently, among them are the corps, elements of the turret and 14 of the main subsystems, in particular, the fire control system, the ammunition supply system, the artillery ballistic station, the collective defense system, the auxiliary power unit, and communications equipment.

The Indian version of the K-9 "Thunder" will have a mass of 47 tons. Howitzer will be adapted to the conditions of the desert. The basic version is equipped with an MTU MT881 Ka-500 V8 engine with 1000 horsepower, an Ellison transmission and is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 67 km / h, a range of fuel - 360 km, mobile ammunition - 48 ammunition. Calculation of installation - 5 people, including the commander, driver, gunner, assistant gunner and loader. The ACS is capable of firing three projectiles within 15 seconds that will hit the target simultaneously (firing mode MRSI). Maximum combat rate of fire - 6-8 shots / min. for 3 min., standard - 2-3 rds / min. In one hour. The firing range of the SAU is 8-40 km, the range of fuel is 450 km. The steel armor case protects against armor-piercing 14,5-mm ammunition and splinters of 152-mm ammunition.

and what surprises you? firstly india always she did things this way, and secondly, it’s very right: to buy from her enterprises. from their point of view, everything is done absolutely right.
with ours, it seems to me, too, because they probably wanted to buy not just 100 howitzers, but technology. technologies are much more expensive than these hundred pieces.

Ours is no worse! It seems that they really did not agree on the price.
A significant advantage of the Russian proposal is that its chassis design consists of almost two-thirds of the components and parts of the Russian T-90C main tank, which is familiar to Indian tankers under the name Bhishma. Licensed production of these vehicles is carried out by the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi. As part of the contract signed by Rosoboronexport in 2014, a base for component repair of the T-90S tank is also being created in India. All this will significantly reduce further costs for the operation and repair of howitzers. From the T-90 tank, Msta-S borrowed a motor-transmission unit with a 1000-horsepower diesel engine V-92C2, elements of the external body kit, bulldozer equipment, and a number of electronic systems. It is not inferior to T-90S in mobility and cross-country ability and can operate in desert and mountainous areas at an altitude of up to 3000 m above sea level.
Most types of ammunition are fired at NATO standard at a range of over 40 km. It is also possible to use Russian guided projectiles Krasnopol-M2 with laser illumination. The presence of an automatic loading system for shells and semi-automatic loading of modular projectile charges facilitates the work of the crew and provides a rate of fire at all guidance angles up to 8 rounds per minute. This means that a battery of eight howitzers can bring down to the target up to three tons of shells per minute. And when firing at maximum range in flight, up to 70 shells will be in the direction of the target before the first reaches the target. Moreover, for emergency situations, a manual loading mode is provided. The transported ammunition is located in the tower and consists of 42 x 155 mm rounds, as well as 300 rounds of ammunition for a remotely controlled 12,7 mm machine gun, which can be used against bursting enemy infantry or low-flying air targets.

India has big requests for the purchase and modernization of military equipment and they are backed up by an obscure national security strategy. Hence the motley fleet, significant, but rather helpless Air Force, let's see what they do with their own ground forces. Moreover, they chose the PLA of the PRC as their rival.

We also need to choose for ourselves both rivals and allies. Not those that look at two sides. First of all, observe your own interests. India likes South Korea’s pricing policy? fellow And why can’t we like the pricing policy of Pakistan, for example? Or what other country? Partnership, it is also partnership in India ... Yes

Indians chose simply one of the best in the world.
They just decided to change their English-made self-propelled guns, which are already old. After all, it’s 50 years in service.

In my opinion, the Koreans turned out to be a good self-propelled gun. At least a few ergonomics of the process are in her favor.

Koreans and inside are somehow more comfortable than in the top 2 options.
they have a normal device, and therefore it sells well.
