Modernization news of the nuclear submarine "Belgorod"
New curious information about the current project was published 21 April edition of "Izvestia". Information on the progress of work, the technical details of the project and the planned dates for its completion were obtained from an unnamed source in the command of the Russian Navy. The representative of the Navy announced some features of the modernization and pointed out the range of tasks to be solved by the updated submarine. As follows from the published information, we are talking about the most serious change not only in the purpose of the boat, but also in its technical appearance.
The nuclear submarine K-329 "Belgorod" delivered for modernization was not completed in due time according to the original 949A project. A few years ago it was decided to complete the construction of the ship on a new project and in a new capacity. Now the work is carried out in accordance with the project 09852. It implies the most serious change in the design of an existing submarine with its equipment with a number of completely new equipment. It is reported that the installation of the latter required a noticeable rework of the existing enclosure.
According to Izvestia, the central part of the submarine was re-designed as part of the 09852 project. In connection with the change of the ship’s targets, it was decided to remove the existing launchers for cruise missiles, along with other units located in the central compartments. Instead of the old units, it was proposed to mount a new section of the hull with a length of about 30 m. It should allow the submarine to solve new problems.
Inside and on the outer surfaces of the new section of the hull of the nuclear submarine Belgorod there is a special equipment that was not present in the basic design. It is proposed to use docking devices designed for the transportation of autonomous deep-water stations of one type or another. Also, the submarine must carry lock chambers to hit the transported station or to exit the divers.
According to the latest news, the installation of a new section will lead to a significant increase in the main dimensions of the submarine. Thus, the length of the submarine "Belgorod" should grow from the original 154 m to 184 m. Such an increase will set a new record: after the modernization, the Belgorod will become the longest submarine in the world. Currently, "champions" are domestic submarines of the 941 "Shark" project, the length of which exceeded 172 m. At the same time, it should be noted that the special submarine of the 09852 project cannot be compared to the older submariners in the remaining dimensions and displacement. Full displacement at the level of 48 th. Tons for a long time will remain a unique and distinctive feature of the "Sharks".
Izvestia briefly described the objectives of the current project. Special nuclear submarine "Belgorod", completed by the project 09852, will have to perform a variety of research tasks. On board the ship must be present special scientific equipment designed to conduct various research. In addition, he will be able to transport and ensure the operation of manned and uninhabited deep-sea vehicles. In fact, there will be an opportunity to perform almost any missions associated with diving to great depths or with work at the bottom.
One of the goals of the submarine can be to participate in studies of the seabed, including the Russian shelf in the Arctic. This area of the northern seas is of great interest from the point of view of science, economy and security, but a number of its characteristic features seriously complicates research work and subsequent development. The deep-water apparatuses working together with Belgorod may be entrusted with the task of searching for minerals, collecting various samples, etc. In addition, it is possible to use new systems for laying various communications.
According to the Izvestia source, the submarine currently being rebuilt according to a new project is located in one of the workshops of the Sevmash enterprise (Severodvinsk). Completion is scheduled for the next 2018 year. The timing of the next stages of the project has not yet been clarified.
It should be noted that, despite the regular appearance of certain news, in general, the project of modernization of the nuclear submarine Belgorod remains covered with a veil of secrecy. There are some details of the construction of the submarine on the basic project. It was later announced the start of a new project. It is possible to predict certain features of modernization, but still the 09582 project still remains secret, which is why only its most basic features are known. All this does not allow to make a complete picture, but at the same time serves as a good occasion for discussions, forecasts and speculations.
Recall that the nuclear submarine cruiser K-329 "Belgorod" of the 949 project was laid in July 1992 at the Sevmash plant. In the spring of next year, the submarine received the current name. In the foreseeable future, the ship was to enter service; its main task would be to track the enemy’s ship groups and, upon receipt of a relevant order, to destroy them with the help of the Granit П-700 cruise missiles. Due to the difficult economic situation and the impossibility of continuing construction in May, the partially assembled submarine 1994 was sent to conservation, because of which its further fate was in doubt.
After the death of the submarine "Kursk", also built on the project 949A, it was decided to continue the construction of "Belgorod" to compensate for the loss. However, the defense budget still did not allow completion of the necessary work. Until a certain time, construction continued at the expense of the Sevmash enterprise, and it was only in 2004 that the state supported the work. In the middle of 2006, it was announced that the Ministry of Defense did not plan to introduce the Belgorod into the navy. There were no clear plans for the future of the boat at that time.
Soon there was a proposal to complete the construction of the submarine on the updated project, which involves the use of modern equipment and newer strike weapons, replacing the complex "Granit". As far as is known, this idea has not progressed beyond general discussion. Only at the beginning of 2012, the naval command announced real plans. Belgorod was proposed to complete the construction of a new special project 09852. Re-submarine took place in December of the same year. The customer for the updated construction was the Main Deep-Water Research Department (GUGI) of the Ministry of Defense.
To date, the submarine remains in the Sevmash workshop and continues to receive new equipment. On completion of the required work will take some time. According to the latest data, the modernization of the boat should be completed in the next 2018 year. After that, she will have to go to the tests, which will also take some time. Depending on the success of the project and the progress of the tests, it is possible to transfer the submarine to the customer no later than the beginning of the next decade.
The technical appearance of the modernized nuclear submarine "Belgorod" is mostly a secret. According to the latest news, after upgrading the submarine will have an updated and elongated durable hull, as a result of which its total length will reach 184 m. It can be assumed that this design refinement will lead to a noticeable increase in displacement, up to 28-30 KT. Other dimensions, however should remain the same. Information about the processing of the main power plant is not available. Most likely, “Belgorod” and in the 09852 project will keep two nuclear reactors of type OK-560В with 190 MW each.
It is reported that the upgraded submarine will become a research ship and carrier of various types of deepwater stations. At various times, forecasts were made about the possible use of 18511 “Halibus” stations, systems of the “Harpsichord” family, etc. Compatibility of Belgorod with the Losharik AC-12 station of the 10831 project, etc. is not excluded. by samples. Officials do not comment on these assumptions, which greatly contributes to the emergence of new versions and speculations.
In November, the 2015 of the year, the Russian media accidentally demonstrated a document describing a promising model of a special torpedo “Status-6”. According to the "leaked" information, this product is able to overcome under its own power up to 10 thousand km at a depth of 1000 m and deliver the nuclear warhead to the target. The submarine of the 09852 project was mentioned as one of the possible carriers of such a torpedo. The joint work of the submarine "Belgorod" and torpedoes "Status-6", at least in theory, allows you to hit targets anywhere in the world. In this case, the carrier in the form of a nuclear submarine will provide the most secretive way to the launch area, and the unique characteristics of the torpedo itself will give the maximum effect of a combat character.
It was also previously mentioned that the submarine of the 09852 project can become the carrier and installer of the Shelf-type nuclear turbogenerator plant (ATGU). A double-circuit water-cooled integrated reactor with a thermal power of 28 MW, a turbo-generator set with a capacity of 6000 kW and the necessary automated control systems are placed in the cylindrical case of such an installation. The system "Shelf" can be used for various purposes, including for the long-term power supply of deployed complexes for detecting submarines of a potential enemy. According to published schemes, which did not receive, however, official confirmation, ATU "Shelf" should be transported on the deck of the submarine carrier, behind the cabin. In preparation for the operation, the installation should be deployed directly on the seabed.
The project of a special submarine 09852 is being implemented in the interests of GUGI, which imposes serious restrictions on the amount of available information and on the amount of newly published data. Only the most general features of the project are known, while the most interesting details have not yet been announced and are unlikely to be published in the foreseeable future. However, well-known information is of great interest.
The completion and deep modernization of the nuclear submarine Belgorod should be completed in 2018. Later, after passing all the necessary tests, the unique ship will be handed over to the customer and will enter service. It is hardly worth expecting that the operator in the person of the General Directorate of Deep-Sea Research will soon publish the details of the submarine service. This means that new information about Belgorod, if it comes in, is rarely and in small quantities. However, we can already say that in the foreseeable future, the Russian Navy will be able to solve special tasks with the help of a new special submarine, complementing the existing ones.
