Italy cuts army
Italy will reduce the order for the F-35 from 131 to 90 aircraft, Defense Minister Giampaolo Di Paola said in an address to the Italian parliament in February at a speech in front of the Italian parliament.
Italy’s reduction of the order for the 41 aircraft is part of a comprehensive reduction of the Italian armed forces, due to a reduction in the military budget by 28 percent in the 2012 year due to the economic crisis in Europe.
Speaking at a joint defense hearing of the defense commission of both houses of the Italian parliament, Di Paola said Italy will also reduce tanks, helicopters and artillery. He then added that two army brigades would be disbanded.
The number of naval ships will also be reduced. fleet, the number of patrol ships will drop from 18 to 10, and the number of submarines will drop from six to four.
Without giving additional information, Di Paola said that the number of fighters of the Italian Air Force will also decrease.
Di Paola said that JSF is a very important aircraft for Italy, which will replace the outdated Tornadoes, AMX bombers and AV8 aircraft in the future. "Italy has already invested 2.5 billion euros ($ 3.29 billion) in this program," he said. "We intended to order the 131 aircraft. Now, revising the program has led us to decide to settle for 90 aircraft."
The number of military bases will be reduced, and the number of troops in Italy will be reduced from 183000 to 150000. Civilian personnel in the Ministry of Defense will be reduced from 30000 to 20000 people. The process of staff cuts will take years, at least ten years, said Di Paola. Staff reductions will be made by limiting the admission of new staff and transferring part of the staff to other government agencies.
At the 14 February February 2012 press conference, Di Paola said that the goal of staff cuts would be Italy’s top officer echelon. "Less generals, fewer admirals, more operational readiness and technology," he said.
