Haftar: UN embargo hinders the supply of Russian weapons to Libya

13
The Libyan National Army discussed with the Russian side the possible supply of Russian weapons within the framework of previously concluded contracts, however, because of the UN arms embargo against Libya, supplies are impossible, the Commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, said, RIA reports News.

We discussed previously signed contracts with Russian friends. But on the practical side, the arms embargo still operates, it makes it difficult to implement these contracts, although they were concluded before the UN Security Council made the decision on the embargo,
- declared Haftar.

Haftar: UN embargo hinders the supply of Russian weapons to Libya

At the moment, according to him, an important source of weapons for the Libyan army are "trophies left on the battlefield by Islamic State militants" *.

Haftar visited Moscow in 2016 in June and in November to meet with the heads of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Defense, as well as the Security Council secretary. According to the commander, arms shipments have not been discussed, as Russia adheres to the UN arms embargo on Libya.

Help "IN": Khalifa Haftar was born in 1943 year, a graduate of the Benghazi Military Academy, was trained in the USSR and Egypt, speaks Russian, participated in the coup that brought Muammar Gaddafi to power. In 1973, during the war with Israel, he commanded Libyan units supporting Egypt. Participated in the Chadian-Libyan conflict and was captured. After that, Gaddafi recanted Haftar, which greatly influenced the relationship between them. With the support of the CIA, Haftar escaped from captivity and moved to Zaire, to Kenya, and finally to the USA. In 2011, Haftar returned to Libya and took part in the war. Haftar today supports the parliament in Tobruk, and he is based in the Benghazi area and periodically conducts hostilities against both the Islamists and the groups associated with Tripoli.

Haftar is assisted primarily by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, which, possibly, by airplanes also deliver weapons to the leading combat forces of the national army of Haftar. It was Egypt and the UAE that could act as intermediaries and push Haftar to openly turn to Russia for military support.

In January 2017, Haftar visited the aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov", during a videoconference with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed fighting terrorists in the Middle East, he also received a batch of medical preparations of prime necessity for the Libyan military and civilians, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

At one time, when the state of Israel was created, informal channels supplied very sickly consignments of weapons. You can now use that experience.

I suspect Victor Bout’s case lives, and if he wanted, he would have already found those who would sell him weapons

What other embargo? The Americans won’t care at all. What they want is what they do. And we all follow some rules.

Would Haftar turn directly to the president, for example, of South Ossetia-Alania about supplies? The UN didn’t seem to forbid anything to them?
