Latvia and Lithuania joined the Polish legal complaint against the decision of the European Commission on the Opal gas pipeline, reports RIA News message to the agency pap.
The agency recalled that Opal receives Russian gas coming to Europe via the Nord Stream offshore gas pipeline, but due to the restrictions of regulators the pipe was not fully loaded. Last fall, the European Commission (EC) approved the expansion of gas access to the pipeline. To the exclusive right of the Russian company to use 50% transit capacity (12,8 billion cubic meters), it allowed Gazprom to participate in the auction for another 40% (about 10,2 billion cubic meters).
Lithuania and Latvia joined the complaint that Poland sent to the EU General Court in the case of the Opal gas pipeline
, the agency writes.
A request for the support of the claim was previously addressed to the Baltic countries by the Polish Foreign Ministry.
Thus, the agency wanted to emphasize that the Opal case is also of significant importance for other countries of Central Europe. The Foreign Ministry expects that the intervention of Lithuania and Latvia will increase the chances for a settlement of the dispute favorable to Poland,
the report said.
In December 2016, the Polish company PGNiG Supply & Trading (PGNiG ST) and the Polish government applied to the General Court with claims to overturn the EC decision of October 28, 2016. At the end of February, Naftogaz filed a petition with the court to involve it as a third party in the case, which was initiated by PGNiG ST. Now the decision of the European Commission has been temporarily suspended.
