UK will write off their helicopter carrier Ocean

45
The British Navy intends to write off its landing helicopter carrier Ocean and this will most likely happen next year. But just like that, the UK does not want to write off the ship, and therefore has now officially proposed the Brazilian Navy to acquire this ship and replace it with the previously decommissioned aircraft carrier São Paulo, historical portal "Warspot" with a link to the portal navaltoday.com.
In February of this year, the Brazilian Ministry of Defense officially announced the withdrawal of its flagship São Paulo. The aircraft carrier has been under repair since 2014, the last examination showed that the cost of repairing it "exceeds the capabilities of the Brazilian Navy". Therefore, the ship to 2020 year demilitarized and most likely sold for scrap. After the cancellation of São Paulo, the Brazilian navy was left without aircraft carriers.

HMS Ocean landing helicopter is the flagship of the British fleet, but should be decommissioned next year after the adoption of Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier. The details of the proposal for the sale of the Ocean helicopter carrier were not disclosed, however, it is known that Brazilian military officials recognized the possible deal as reasonable, based on the proposed price of the ship.

Helicopter HMS Ocean

HMS Ocean was adopted by the British fleet in 1995 year. The ship's length is 202 m, displacement is more than 21 000 tons. The ship can hold more than 40 military vehicles, can carry up to 18 helicopters, as well as more 800 man of the landing force and almost 500 crew members, including air wing personnel.

And that is not all fellow
Istra is a former small military tanker of the German fleet T 13 Else. The tanker was laid down in 1939 at the DW Kremer Sohn shipyard. (building number 854) in Elmshorn (Germany) and became part of the German fleet on July 25, 1941 under the name T 13 Else. The motor ship had a displacement of 1200 tons (638 bt), a payload of 973 tons, a length of 61 m, a width of 9,04 m and a draft of 2,75 m. Two MWM-DM diesel engines with a total capacity of 900 hp provided the vessel with a speed of 12,5 knots. The crew of 20 people. The tanker was designed to transport fuel and refuel military ships. In May 1945, Else came under British control and was operated for some time under the British flag under the name Empire Tigina. On June 20, 1946, due to reparations from Germany, it was transferred to the Soviet Union. In 1946, the ship from the Baltic was transferred to the main base of the Black Sea Fleet Sevastopol and became part of the Black Sea Fleet of the USSR Navy under the name "Elsa". In 1948 it was renamed “Istra.” In 2000, the sailor of the tanker Georgy Lezgovko, deciding to find out the history of the name of his ship, wrote a letter to the administration of Istra district. In 2001, the entire tanker was invited to the celebration of Istra City Day. Then a return visit took place and ... for 8 years now, Istra people can proudly say that we have "our" tanker!

Now MMT "Istra" is part of the 205th detachment of support vessels of the Black Sea Fleet.
Despite its “venerable” age, the tanker is still one of the best ships of the detachment and the most exploited in the Black Sea Fleet. The Istra tanker daily carries diesel fuel, five types of special high-quality oils and refuel warships. Moreover, with regards to oils, the ship is the only craft capable of performing such a task.
Of great value is the fact that the tanks on the ship are enameled and do not rust at all.

Well, why? The article also says that they will be written off after the adoption of a leading aircraft carrier such as Queen Elizabeth. Apparently the British sailors felt that this aircraft carrier is quite capable of landing operations

They are generally interesting guys. They can buy super-expensive base patrol aircraft, and write them off right away, because they decided to save money.

They now generally have a big process of shaking and shrinking their own armed forces, and the sale of a helicopter carrier is just one of the fad.

Oh yes ... the story with Nimrod MRA.4 came out just cool. 15 years to develop a new basic patrol, spend 3,6 billion pounds, collect two cars - and close the program with the sending of a reserve for disposal. And this at a time when the fleet by hook or by crook (right up to blackmailing the prime minister by increasing unemployment if the building was canceled) knocked out money to complete the “Prince of Wales”, which they were going to cancel by construction, then build and sell right away.
On January 25, 2011, the British company BAE Systems began dismantling Nimrod MRA4 reconnaissance aircraft, commissioned by the British Ministry of Defense, but never accepted for service. According to Flightglobal, the fuselage of the aircraft is being cut at the BAE Systems enterprise in Cheshire. Earlier, British media dubbed Nimrod MRA4 "the most expensive scrap metal in the world" - 3,6 billion pounds ($ 5,7 billion) were spent on the development of aircraft.
As part of the Nimrod MRA4 creation program, it was planned to assemble nine aircraft. To date, two such aircraft have been assembled, and the production of three more machines has also begun. The creation of aircraft has been carried out since 1996. Only one Nimrod MRA4 made its first flight on August 26, 2004; the remaining planes did not manage to take part in the flight test program. The decision to close the project was made by the UK government and announced on October 20, 2010 in the new National Security Strategy ..

And the main joke is that the base patrols still had to be bought - nine American "Poseidons". smile

Nonsense, it's just a piece of iron. Not to let him go to scrap, he is only a little more than 20 years old, for a ship his age is small. If for the British Navy there was no need for it, then why not sell it.

Actually, this is a common practice. Many fleets of third world countries were manned and equipped with such decommissioned ships. The same Brazilian AB Sao Paulo mentioned in the article is the decommissioned French Foch.
From British ships, AB Hermes immediately comes to mind, which they were going to write off and sell just before the Falklands ... and, fortunately for RN, they did not have time. However, you won’t get away from fate - and after the Falklands Hermes were still written off, podshamanil and sold to India, where he became AB Viraat smile

The fleet is still Brazil. Others just have ruins.

As for rationality - they had to upgrade São Paulo with new catapults that would throw the Influenza NHF or Rafale. But then the lobbyists of this project were driven out of their posts (and who were sent to prison) - and São Paulo was scrapped.

However, they don’t really have transport helicopters, attack helicopters (we don’t consider the cut-off Mi-35M), nor VTOL. That is, at the air group, they will go broke only on the road.

Let them at least do something.

But I went through the names, looked at their old and new models of aircraft carrier ships, saw some differences, and Russian shipbuilders in the projects tread on the same rake, do not take into account the mistakes of other countries.

The bottom line is the layout of the upper deck and the layout of the storage and rolling out of aircraft.
The elevators were removed from the runway to the side, the runway was lengthened.
The start of the runway was made in the center to deploy the aircraft.
Parking on the deck front and rear near the elevators, even during take-off / landing, you can lift up equipment and loads.
Also, the helicopter carrier was replaced by an aircraft carrier, which, as it hints at the lack of helicopter functions, they really need airplanes at sea. This is understandable, since a helicopter is for landing. And when you need to bomb buildings, structures, ships, you need a plane.

You can laugh at this, but the possibilities of the ekonymka (for the money!) Of Brazil are higher than the capabilities of the Russian economy. In absolute terms of GDP, backward Brazil is much ahead of the Russian Federation. We have GDP at the level of Mexico! With the possibilities of such an economy, it is very difficult to maintain a modern army, and even more so to build aircraft carriers!

Now I have become more clear about the essence of aircraft carriers.
They are needed to protect their naval bases scattered around the planet.
The naval base is usually a leased plot on the wharf; if a war breaks out in the country, it will either have to be protected or lost. Of course, it’s cheaper to bring attack helicopters on landing ships and take off from any level ground, at least from the pier. But in the presence of organized air defense it is dangerous to drive helicopters, their simplest means can bring down. Planes are faster, they require expensive anti-aircraft systems against them, which not every rebel and government can afford, and they are difficult to manage - they need time to perfect their skills to get on planes. Yes, and aircraft can destroy warehouses behind enemy lines, and helicopters can’t get there, they will not be able to disrupt the supply of ammunition and provisions of the enemy. This means aircraft are more effective in fighting the enemy, causing more damage.
