New weapons 2017: Maxim 9 - a gun with a built PBS

Last year, SilencerCo demonstrated a prototype pistol chambered for 9x19 cartridges with a built-in noiseless firing device. Over the past year, the company managed to bring the design weapons to the working sample, which was presented at the exhibition SHOT Show 2017 under the name Maxim 9. As always, they are screaming about the revolutionism of this weapon from all sides, but it is still too early to draw hasty conclusions, especially since the pistol has obvious flaws that can be seen even from a superficial examination of the weapon.

Revolution or nothing new?

It is quite clear that when a manufacturer, in order to advertise, tells about the uniqueness and uniqueness of its weapon, advertising must move the product. Much more interesting is the fact that many ordinary people picked up the idea of ​​a revolutionary design, completely forgetting that serial weapons with an integrated device for silent shooting appeared at the end of the first half of the twentieth century.

The most important advantage of his gun company SilencerCo puts the dimensions of the weapon. It is difficult to disagree with such a statement, as the gun is really smaller in size than any other similar weapon with attached PBS. But this is not a merit of the weapon design, but a feature of the silent shooting device. The fact is that whatever one may say, the PBS will still increase the dimensions of the weapon, as it is installed after the muzzle cut. Reduced dimensions of the pistol are achieved only thanks to an unusual form of PBS. Is it worth talking about the revolutionary design, if all the revolutionary is to change the shape of the device silent shooting?

The design of the gun Maxim 9

The basis for the Maxim 9 pistol became an automatic system with a free gate. The solution is more than strange, provided that 9x19 cartridges are used. Problems with cartridges with a subsonic bullet should not occur, but the manufacturer suggests the possibility of using conventional 9x19, which can lead to increased wear and subsequent breakage.

In general, the design of the gun is not quite normal. Two return springs on the guides are located above the trigger mechanism. The guides are inserted into the frame of the weapon and fixed with a folding insert, in the lower part of the frame there are also guides for the shutter. Thus, in order to gain access to the trigger mechanism, it is enough just to raise the liner and remove the bolt, which is definitely a plus for the weapon. What is more interesting is that to clean the device with silent firing, you have to unscrew the 4 screws, which is clearly not the most convenient disassembly option.

The trigger mechanism of a pistol is a pistol, double action, with pre-articulation when the trigger is pulled. Such USM allowed to abandon the switch fuse, limiting only the key on the trigger.
Of the controls on the gun, there is only a slide delay key on both sides of the weapon and a magazine eject button that can be installed on either side of the gun. Aim devices consist of a pillar and a front sight with light accumulating points.

Characteristics of the gun Maxim 9

The Maxim 9 pistol is 250 millimeters long, there is also a larger model with an extra camera in the silent shooting device, it has a length of 270 millimeters. With such dimensions, the barrel length in both versions of the weapon is equal to 111 millimeters. The weapon is powered from the shops of Glock 17 or Glock 30 pistols.

Pros and cons of the gun Maxim 9

The main advantage of the gun Maxim 9 is its compact size. Like it or not, but 25 centimeters with a silent shooting device is not so much. Bilateral weapons is also a clear plus.

The pistol has a lot more minuses. First of all, it is worth noting that that part of the gun, which is a device for silent shooting, requires separate tools for disassembly, and the disassembly itself will not be the easiest. Inserts in PBS, which divide it into separate chambers are all different, which means that if they are worn, you will need to buy a complete set. The inability to remove the CBE is also a minus. It is clear that the weapon is quite specific and is not intended for permanent use, but this possibility would obviously not be superfluous.

We should also note the automatic system of the Maxim 9 pistol. Yes, the automatic shutter circuit is certainly the most simple and reliable, but it is hardly suitable for the 9x19 cartridge. If the pistol normally behaves with ammunition with a subsonic bullet, then full-fledged cartridges can lead to the deformation of the sleeves after the shot and their rupture, which will lead to weapon failures. In addition, increased wear when using standard cartridges can lead to the fact that sooner or later the gate guides will break, and judging by the design, the bolt will fly straight into the face of the arrow. Still, it seems to me, the manufacturer has got excited with the use of full-fledged 9x19.

It would be more logical to use one of the variants of the automation scheme with a short stroke of the weapon, especially since the design of the pistol completely allows this to be done, since the barrel is not tied to the device for silent firing. It was possible to use an automation scheme with a long barrel stroke and, in the end, even with a semi-free gate, if the designers were confused by the distortion of the barrel when firing. This would expand the number of variants of used ammunition and increase the reliability of weapons.

In general, the weapon turned out to be quite interesting, only its futuristic appearance will attract the attention of many, but it clearly does not pull on something revolutionary. It is doubtful that such a weapon can make a company more profit, much more could be earned if a device of silent shooting of a similar design was developed for common models of weapons, for example for the same Glock 17, but SilencerCo managers, of course, know better.

The gun is currently priced at up to $ 1500.

Yes, the automation scheme with a free shutter is certainly the simplest and most reliable, but it is unlikely to be suitable for a 9x19 cartridge.

If instead of the trunk a stub of a centimeter is 3-4, then the return is less. The problem is different - excess powder gases from a standard cartridge. Noise will be significantly greater, plus accelerated muffler wear. Then it would be better to switch to the .45 ACP cartridge altogether. But the bullet of this cartridge is not suitable for membrane-type separators.

Unlike I. Ya. Stechkin and B.V. Avraamov, people from SilencerCo did not manage to create a normal pistol with a free shutter under a 9 mm cartridge.
The only revolutionary solution for this gun is the design. This is a ready-made blaster for brave space marines from science fiction films.
