On Wednesday, the 2 strategic bomber of the Russian Air Force Tu-95, 2 fighter-reconnaissance aircraft Su-27 and the A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft flew over Japanese airspace around the north-eastern coast of Honshu Island and northern Hokkaido. This is stated in a statement by the Ministry of Defense, published by the media in Tokyo.
There were no violations of Japanese airspace, but the country's air force lifted interceptors into the air. The Japanese Defense Ministry noted that the military aircraft of Russia for the first time in such numbers flew over the airspace. This approach of the radar reconnaissance aircraft was also unprecedented - the Japanese interceptors first photographed it.
Last year, two strategic Tu-95MS of Russia bomber over 19 hours flew over the mainland of Japan from Kyushu to Hokkaido, without violating the country's airspace. This patrol was observed by 10 fighters of the Japanese and South Korean Air Forces. After this flight, the Japanese government officially asked the Russian Federation to refrain from such flights in the future, ITAR-TASS reports.
