Optical-electronic complex of observation "Irony"

As part of the current rearmament program, various systems of various applications are supplied, including modern means of observation. According to the latest reports from representatives of the Ministry of Defense, a few days ago another batch of equipment was transferred to one of the special-purpose connections. The effectiveness of the work of the fighters of this compound will now be higher thanks to the new observation complex "Irony".

February 7 press service of the Western Military District announced the next delivery of the latest equipment. A number of optical-electronic complexes "Irony" were transferred to the special purpose compound deployed in the Tambov region. With the help of such equipment special forces soldiers will be able to solve various tasks related to the observation of the terrain and the detection of various objects. In addition, the capabilities of the complex allow not only to identify various goals, but also to transmit data about them to one or another consumer.

Fighter with opto-electronic device

It should be noted that the “Irony” complexes have not been a novelty for our army for a long time. The first production samples of such equipment were transferred to the troops several years ago. In the spring of 2015, new devices received special forces of the Central Military District. A little later, similar equipment arrived in other units of the armed forces. Also in the past, it has been repeatedly reported on the use of “Irony” systems in various exercises.

The multifunctional optical-electronic complex “Irony” is intended for monitoring and collecting information about the terrain, including the detection of various objects. Observation is provided at any time of the day with the possibility of determining the coordinates of the target and transmitting data about it. The project provides for the creation of two versions of the complex: mounted on the vehicle and portable. The complex also includes additional detection tools to protect the scouts from the surprise attack of the enemy.

The main element of the “Irony” complex is an optical-electronic device used directly for conducting observation. This product weighing about 3,2 kg is made in the form of a compact system with a set of required optics and other systems. It has a box-shaped body with rounded corners and edges. On the front wall of the device there are three lenses of different systems, in the stowed position covered by hinged covers. On the side surfaces there is the placement of belts for carrying and a set of buttons for controlling the equipment. An eyepiece is placed on the back wall, allowing the operator to observe.

The “Irony” complex has a composition of optics traditional for modern means of observation and detection. It is equipped with a video camera, thermal imager and laser range finder. The signal from all optical devices is transmitted to a miniature monitor mounted in the eyepiece. The operation of devices is carried out using a set of buttons, placed with the maximum ease of use.

Having small dimensions, "Irony" has a rather high performance. At any time of day there is the possibility of detecting equipment at distances up to 7 km, both with the help of a video camera, and with the use of a thermal imager. A human imager can detect at distances up to 2,5 km. The maximum distances measured by the laser rangefinder correspond to the detection distances: 7 km for vehicles and 2,5 km for humans.

The optoelectronic device of the observation complex is equipped with its own means of communication of a small radius of action. With their help, the device is connected to another element of the complex. For the primary processing and transmission of the collected intelligence data as part of the complex, a multifunctional compact computer is used. With the help of such a "handheld" calculation can conduct observation, as well as solve some other problems.

Complex in expanded state

The most important feature of the “Irony” complex is the ability to transfer photos or video in real time. Thanks to the computer communication systems used, which are actually a signal transponder from an opto-electronic device, the soldiers, who are up to 10 km from the occupied position, can observe the terrain with the calculation. The signal is transmitted over a closed radio channel.

The complex also includes additional surveillance tools that allow, among other things, to secure the calculation during operation. Provides for the use of multiple motion sensors, with which the scouts can control the space radius 3 km. When the enemy enters the zone controlled by motion sensors, the calculation of "Irony" will be warned in time about the danger and will be able to take the necessary measures.

The calculation of the observation complex consists of two people. One of them works with optical devices and carries out direct observation of the terrain, directing objectives to the studied area. It can also determine the direction of the detected target and the distance to it. Small dimensions and weight of the device do not impose serious restrictions on the placement of the fighter, allowing him to choose the most convenient position in the current conditions.

The second scout is the computer operator. It is responsible for processing data from optical devices, as well as communicating and transmitting data to consumers. The small size of the "handheld" also greatly facilitates the work of the operator, ensuring him the secrecy of work and high mobility.

Complex "Irony" can be manufactured and supplied in two versions. The first version of a complete set is intended for installation on existing armored cars, such as "Tiger" or "Gusar". Such a complex weighs a total of 15 kg and includes several devices required for mounting the equipment on the host machine.

Also developed a portable version of the complex, characterized by low mass. In this case, the elements of the complex are transferred by calculation in compact bags. The total weight of "Irony" in a portable configuration - just 3,2 kg. This allows you to transfer the complex by the calculation forces along with the staff weapons and other equipment. To deploy a complex to a position, a minimum time is required: you only need to take the equipment out of the bags and turn it on. If necessary, reconnaissance aircraft can take tripods with them for long-term placement of devices in the same positions.

Using a computer from the "Irony"

Using the optical-electronic complex "Irony", the soldiers of special units can solve a wide range of tasks related to the observation of the terrain and the detection of various objects. Such equipment in the "automotive" configuration can be used when conducting patrols of territories, as well as, with appropriate restrictions, in the course of reconnaissance in the enemy's immediate rear. The portable version of the complex can also be used by reconnaissance groups, including those moving along a specified route without vehicles.

In both cases, the complex can be used to create an intelligence system responsible for the security of a specific area. With the simultaneous deployment of several complexes at a distance from each other, it becomes possible to create a continuous field of observation and detection up to several kilometers wide along the front and depth. In this case, the equipment will be in the field of view of operators at distances of at least 7 km, day and night, and people will be able to identify at distances of 2,5 km. Data from optical devices, including video, can be transmitted to the command post, coordinating the actions of the entire connection.

The possibility of radio communication and signal transmission in real time is one of the most important advantages of “Irony”. When using such a function, the transfer of data about the detected object is greatly simplified: a remote information consumer can get not only a description of the target from the intelligence officer, but also see it personally, which should have a positive effect on the results of intelligence.

Serial production and supply of observation complexes "Irony" began several years ago. According to official reports from the press services of the Ministry of Defense and Military Districts, to date, special-purpose units of the Central and Western Military Districts have received similar equipment. The exact number of the delivered complexes is not disclosed, but official reports suggest that the equipment received was enough to equip three special forces units. It should be noted that in open sources only data about the delivery of a portable version of the complex appeared. Confirmed information about the existence of a vehicle-based system is not yet available. It is known only about the possibility of making a similar modification.

There is every reason to believe that production and supplies will continue, thanks to which the Irony system will receive new units in all four military districts. In addition, in the future, troops may receive the first samples of "automotive" observation complexes. The availability of equipment in all existing options will give a certain increase in efficiency in addition to other benefits. As a result, the army will receive a sufficient number of highly effective and necessary means of observation of the latest types.

Well ... not bad! I think that this complex can be used not only for observation (reconnaissance); but also for remote control of minefields (for example, promising "anti-roof" mines of the Temp-20 type with SPBE ammunition); remote mining modules; remotely controlled ATRA modules ... of course, after some modernization.

And here earlier, in other topics, systems of counteraction and suppression of optical observation and aiming systems were mentioned.
I wonder if Irony has protection against laser suppression?

Well, and what "standard" methods are used in modern ECEs? The use of optics that do not give "glare", shutters to optics, short-term (pulsed) mode of operation - to ensure the secrecy of the complex, the same "shutters" with sensors to protect the device from "overload".

      Well ... not bad!

Disgusting. Not only does the laser range finder unmask, they still haven’t come up with anything better than radio communications between the devices of the complex itself! A gift for the enemy’s RTR, bearing I don’t want.
This complex is simply not a tenant on the battlefield. And the name is Irony. More precisely it would be - "Mockery" (over scouts).

Why are you so worried !? And do not scare people with a cry: Everything is lost! Everything is no good! Nothing is missing! Laser rangefinders, target indicators didn’t disappear, in spite of the “unmask” ... radio communications, radio control didn’t “disappear”, regardless of the “issues”! No army has refused and is not going to abandon laser devices, from radio-controlled weapons! It’s just that all this must be applied skillfully (according to the situation), and not as a “trained monkey”.

There are concrete suggestions, how to hide the radiation of the station from the enemy’s RTR and from the thermal imaging and nightly means of observing the enemy’s laser rangefinder?
Not? Some common phrases "skillfully, according to the situation"?
Do you even imagine how well the laser beam is visible in the thermal imager and even in the NVD ?!

The laser beam and its source (on Hammer) in the NVD (I will explain specifically for the patriot, modern NVD see the "near infrared spectrum"):

Almost every infantryman of the US Army is equipped with a thermal imager and NVD. This is how they will see our laser rangefinders and laser designators. And we can’t do it.
And Uri-patriots on the sofa will remain, of course, safe and sound. And the producers are the "retractors" of this unmasking Irony.

Yo mine! So you gave out a "bunch of nonsense", but I also have to answer ?! Do you want an "ideal"? Wanting is not harmful (well, maybe not too often ...)! But the "ideal" in the real world is difficult to achieve (and sometimes it’s impossible ...)! Your “criticism” can be addressed to both radar technology, and, in general, radio communications, radio control .... But, for some reason, they did not listen to you, and, as before, the mentioned devices are actively developed and used throughout the “world”! The disadvantages of the mentioned equipment can be reduced, masked by skillful organizational (integrated) measures, tactical methods of application. Moreover, the “pluses” in “Irony” I “saw” when using the complex as a remotely controlled module, as part of more complex combat systems (including "autonomous")

In this ad, not a word about the power consumption of this device ... sad
I mean, how much will the battery weigh to it ??? Or is there nanotechnology ??? winked

In connection with the listed capabilities of the complex, the question arises: can "Irony" detect and identify, say, a bear? a wolf? flock of wolves? etc. And at what distance?
I myself think that I just MUST, but I want to clarify.
I recall the story of Stanislav Lem (from the series about the pilot Pirks), about an expedition to the moon, where a similar detector could not distinguish an aluminum support from a person unconscious, which caused REAL human casualties.
