According to LiveFist, the organization of defense research in India has demonstrated a new heavy 155-mm howitzer. The gun of this caliber is first developed in the country. It has already passed the developmental tests. In the summer of 2017, the howitzer is planned to be transferred to the ground forces for testing.
A new gun is being created with the aim of updating the existing fleet of towed artillery guns, which was acquired back in the 1960-1970-ies and is currently considerably outdated. Tenders held over the years for 30 to replace this arsenal have not been completed. Against this background, the development of ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, the latest towed artillery system) with its own forces began in 2010. It is assumed that mass production will begin in the year 2019.
The howitzer is equipped with a 52 barrel with a caliber (a little more than eight meters) and has a mass of 12 tons. The gun has the ability to conduct aimed fire vertically with an elevation angle of minus three to 70 degrees. Horizontal shelling guns can produce with an angle from minus 25 to 25 degrees. In intensive mode, a howitzer can fire at three shots per 15 seconds. At a steady pace, the rate of fire is one shot per minute. The range of fire is limited to 50 km, the maximum effective range is 40 km.
In addition to ATAGS in India, Dhanush cannon is being developed on the basis of the Swedish howitzer Bofors FH-77B, which the Indians purchased a license to produce as early as the 1980s. The Indian version of the 155-mm cannon will be different barrel-length 45 calibers instead of 39. Howitzers are tested from 2016 year. Adopt a weapon is assumed to 2020 year.
