Igor Dodon in Moscow: "The Agreement on the Euro-Association of Moldova will be canceled"
Vladimir Putin took the welcome word:
I am very glad to welcome you in Moscow.
Moldova is an important partner for Russia in the region. Unfortunately, we all know that relations between our countries have recently been developing not in the best way. This is evidenced by the drop in trade, in recent years, it has fallen almost twice.
But I very much hope that your first visit to Russia (this is Igor Dodon’s first foreign visit as president) will be a good impetus for the development of our interstate relations in all areas.
Of course, my colleagues and I - we all once again congratulate you on your election to the post of president of Moldova and on taking office.
Igor Dodon:
Many thanks for the congratulations. Thank you for the kind words that came at the end of last year and in recent years.
Of course, I am sure that a new period is beginning in our relations. The last seven years, unfortunately, even the strategic partnership with the Russian Federation has disappeared from the Moldovan strategic documents. But last year, the people of Moldova voted for the president and voted for the president’s program. The majority of citizens of the Republic of Moldova voted for the preservation of statehood, for neutrality, for strategic partnership with the Russian Federation, for the solution of the Transnistrian conflict, the Transnistrian issue, for the preservation of our traditional Orthodox values. And we very much hope, and the people of Moldova really hope that with 2017, a new stage begins in our country, and we will be able to restore the strategic partnership in key areas.
Moldovan President Igor Dodon during the meeting also touched on the agreement on Euro-Association. According to him, he believes that this agreement has dealt a serious blow to the Moldovan economy before taking the presidency, and now.
Dodon:
The President of Moldova after the meeting, speaking at a press conference, said that he had asked Vladimir Putin to consider the issue of granting Moldova observer status in the Eurasian Economic Union.
Journalists asked Igor Dodon if he was ready to recognize the Crimea as Russian. According to the Moldavian president, not a single politician from Moldova is ready to make such recognition today for objective reasons for the existence of a pressing Transnistrian issue.
