London begins hearing on Ukraine's 3 billionth debt
37
Recall that Russia filed a lawsuit to recover the debt and unpaid interest ($ 75 million) in February 2016.
“Eurobond of three billion dollars was placed on non-market conditions (with a coupon rate of 5% per annum) in favor of Ukraine at the end of 2013 of the year. Until the end of 2015, Kiev regularly serviced the debt, but then defaulted on these bonds. Kiev offered Moscow to restructure the debt on common terms with commercial lenders, but Russia insisted on the sovereign nature of the debt and offered a pre-trial solution to the issue. There was no counter-offer from Ukraine, so now the court must determine the outcome of the case, ”the agency reminds.
Late last year, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that Moscow has a high chance of winning a case in London. At the same time, he expressed regret that Kiev "imitated the activity on reaching agreements" more.
The objections of the Ukrainian side on the claim are based on the statement that the loan agreement "is invalid and is not subject to enforcement" for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is the alleged coercion carried out by Moscow throughout the entire 2013 year in order to prevent the signing of an association agreement with the European Union.
