Gaddafi Jr. as a compromise figure for the new Libya
The first serious blow to the new Libyan authorities, which obviously cannot keep the situation in the country under control, was dealt in the city of Bani Walid last week. The city, located in the north-west of the country, was captured by people who opened fire on the PNS forces not only from rifle weapons, but also from heavy type guns. In order to somehow mitigate the situation, PNS leaders hurried to declare that Bani Walid was attacked by not at all the supporters of the murdered colonel, but by some representatives of the local warfall tribe, who are not going to return the city under the green banners of Jamahiriya. However, some time later, it turned out that representatives of the Libyan authorities were completely wrong. Yes - the city really was in the hands of people from the Warfalla tribe, but on the streets of Bani Walid, all the same green flags appeared that the PNS was afraid of. Moreover, French and Israeli correspondents recorded how people who managed to knock out the so-called government troops from Bani Walid wrote on the walls of city buildings a phrase that was considered traditional for the Gadhafi reign: “God, Muammar, Libya and everything!”
After the representatives of the Transitional National Council tried to put pressure on the elders of the Warfalla tribe, the latter declared that from now on they would cease all contact with people who were plundering their lands and plunging the country into chaos. It was even announced that the cities of Bani Walid and Sirte, which, by the way, had resisted the PNS the longest, now form their own government. After “close contacts” with the elders of the warfallah, Mubarak al-Fatami, who is the head of the municipal council of the new Libyan authorities, was forced to declare that Bani Walid was really in the hands of the caddaphists, and that it was not possible to dislodge them from their positions.
Meanwhile, in addition to the PNS and supporters of the overthrown and murdered Gaddafi, a third force is also in a hurry to intervene. This force is called radical Islamism in the face of representatives of various groups trying to build a state in Libya, completely devoid of secular status. Elections to the new parliament and the adoption of a new Libyan constitution are scheduled for the coming summer in Libya. But in order to proceed to the use of democratic instruments, we need at least some kind of stability. In Libya, it does not smell. Each city has recently become a stronghold of forces, in it are located and completely unwilling to listen to the arguments of their neighbors. In this situation, the Libyan scenario could be much worse than the Egyptian scenario. Recall that in Egypt, as a result of the recent parliamentary elections, Islamists celebrated a convincing victory, and the situation on the streets of Cairo once again boiled. Information has appeared that the facts of fatal attacks on foreign tourists have become more frequent. But in Egypt, speaking of popular anger, it is mainly only about the capital. In Libya, literally every city is heated to the limit. A small spark is enough for the situation to flare up with a huge pillar of flame.
Despite the fact that the PNS argue that it’s not worth talking about any revenge from the Kaddafists, the tendency to seize cities may well spread to the whole of Libya. After the seizure of Bani Walid, the situation became extremely tense in Tripoli. For several days, the battles in such sectors of the Libyan capital as Islami, El-Siyyah Haddab and Sidi al-Msiri do not stop. Entire quarters are colored green.
In Ben Daud, according to eyewitness accounts, battles broke out no longer between supporters of the ideas of the Jamahiriya and the new government forces, but between individual battalions of the PNS troops. This led to the fact that local educational institutions were urgently closed, the work of retail outlets was stopped. The civilians didn’t understand at all what they should do in such a situation, because the representatives of the newly named authorities had already begun to openly clarify the relations between themselves. This is explained by the fact that today Islamic militants are actively introduced in the part of the so-called rebels, who will do everything to prevent the current leadership of the PNS from remaining in power.
But, in all likelihood, many representatives of the current Libyan leadership and are not eager to lead a country devoured by internal contradictions. The mayor of the city of Benghazi voluntarily left his post, and PNS Vice-President Abdel Hafiz Gogh resigned as well, who explained his decision with a focus on supporting the will of the people. In other words, the leaders of the revolution understand that the evil gin that they themselves have released from the bottle will now do everything to sow great chaos in the country. In fact, they themselves sign in their helplessness.
But if the weakness of the PNS leaders is obvious, as the Libyan people’s reluctance to get radical Islamists as new authorities is obvious, who can become the compromise leader of Libya? Paradoxically, but such a man could well become the son of a murdered colonel - Seif al-Islam. After the Hague Tribunal actually ordered the new Libyan (obviously, temporary) authorities to have Gaddafi Jr. tried not in Libya, it can be concluded that this figure may well become extremely significant for the big Libyan party.
If we analyze the situation in which Gaddafi Jr. would have been regarded as a possible new leader of Libya, then she does not look so unacceptable. Firstly, Seif al-Islam is considered by many tribal elders as the direct heir of Muammar Gaddafi, who died a martyr's death, secondly, Gaddafi Jr. can also become one who stops the expansion of radical Islam in northern Africa, thirdly, Seif al-Islam is completely can satisfy the West if it accepts its conditions. However, there is one weighty "but." In order for Gaddafi Jr. to become the head of Libya, the West will force him to fairly repent for his father’s "crimes". Thus, the West, led by the United States, will have the opportunity to declare that their democratization has achieved its main goal - to turn to democratic ideals even those who are members of the family of Muammar Gaddafi. And if so, then let them, they say, correct the mistakes of Gaddafi Sr. Whether Seif al-Islam himself will accept possible proposals from the West is a question. If he accepts, then it can be assumed that the Libyan people will be ready to accept the new leader as meekly as they accepted the revolution imposed from the outside against his father. The world has already noticed that the Libyans are ready for any changes concerning the power structures. Therefore, the appearance of a “new” Gaddafi at the head of the Libyan state should not be rejected, unless, of course, the thirst for redistribution of power leads Libya into a final deadlock.
