On the effectiveness of Soviet fighter air regiments in the Great Patriotic War

9

This year the country will celebrate the 67 anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. But after so many years after the termination of that terrible war, stories its full of white spots. One of such white spots is the history of the Soviet fighter aviation, or rather its main tactical formation - fighter regiments. What have we known about them for over 60 years? At first, back in Soviet times, everywhere you could find only information about the regiments in which A.I. fought Pokryshkin and I.N. Kozhedub, sometimes even without mentioning regiment numbers. Moreover, when it came to Kozhedub, for some reason everything came down to a large extent to the 176th Guards Iap, in which he had been flying since the end of August 1944. And somehow, rather modestly, as if in passing, 178 giap were mentioned, although in it he won 3/4 of his victories, took place as an ace. Sometimes information was provided about 18 giap, which, after all, still flew with the Normandy-Niemen.

Glimpsed materials and the shelf of Lev Shestakova, 9 giap, also often without a number and full name, and even more often associated with the period of defense of Odessa. Much has been written about the first Twice Hero fighter pilot Air Force SF B.F. Safonov, but also, as a rule, the number and full name of the regiment were not mentioned. As a kind of breakthrough, the edition in 1972 of the book about the combat route of the 16 Air Force, in which a large number of numbers of air regiments, their honorary titles and awards was mentioned, is now remembered. Over the past 20 years, of course, there has also been some progress for the better: thanks, first and foremost, to aviation enthusiasts, and not to professional military historians, monographs appeared on the history of a number of fighter air regiments of the Great Patriotic War - 32 and 40 Guards; 402 iap, some more parts. But the fact is that it is a drop in the ocean. Few people know that according to the lists of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces, the Army in the period from 812 to 22.06.41 and from 9.05.45 to 9.08.45 in various periods of hostilities was 3.09.45 fighter regiments of the Air Force, Air Defense and Aviation Navy. The figure is impressive, especially since most of them are little known to many who are interested in both the history of aviation and the history of the Second World War, in particular. It was these considerations that in 420-s made me, bit by bit, getting from the poor to the truthful and complete information of the then sources, to start collecting and systematizing everything connected with the Soviet fighter aviation, first of all with its main tactical combat formation - fighter regiments, and try sometime to get enough complete and accurate information. And over time, if God gives, then make it all accessible to anyone interested in the history of aviation, as well as military history and the history of the Second World War.

After getting acquainted with Mikhail Bykov, who later grew into a friendship, he was the first in our country to gather and systematize tremendous information about the Soviet aces of the Great Patriotic War and, as a result, released a wonderful, I’m not afraid of this word, work: “Soviet Aces 1941-1945. Victory Stalin falcons, born creative union. The result of this alliance is many years of working with archival documents, primarily in the Central Department of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation (Podolsk), and, practically, by 95-97 percent ready material for the reference book on fighter regiments of the 1941-1945 years the composition of the Army. I want to say at once that there will not be a number of regiments that existed at that time, but were not mentioned in the lists of units that were part of the Active Army (for example, 167 iap, the entire war was in SAVO). And, in fact, it will be a brief history of each regiment from the moment of its formation until the moment of its disbandment, including a number of regiments that stopped their history just recently, in the 2009 year, during the so-called military reforms. The emphasis, of course, will be on the period of the war, the full combat path of the regiment will be given, all its awards and honorary names with numbers and order dates, the types of aircraft on which each regiment flew, the results of combat work (the number of combat sorties, air battles, planes shot down and destroyed on the ground, other equipment destroyed during the ground attack, their losses in materiel and personnel). If any regiment participated in the pre-war (oz. Hassan, Khalkhin-Gol, the Soviet-Finnish war, etc.) or post-war conflicts (Korea), then information about this and the results of combat activities will also be given in full. This directory will not contain air regiments that were formed in the post-war period, beginning with the 1949 year and up to the 80-s of the 20-th century. The book will provide a brief historical background on 420 fighter regiments. Why brief? - Because the full story of almost every regiment will draw on a full-fledged monograph of several hundred pages, namely: the 172 Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Air Force of the SC, which reached the 9 of May of 1945 of the year; 92 air defense IA regiment, who fought on the Soviet-German front; 74 Fighter Aviation Regiment, which took part in hostilities, but disbanded in 1941-1943; 45 regiments who fought with Japan in August 1945, but did not participate in the battles on the Soviet-German front; The 37 regiments of the Navy Air Force IA, i.e. all four fleets, which in different periods of World War II were fighting. Naturally, this work will, finally, in a more or less complete form, answer this question, which has been wondering for many years to those who are more or less involved in the history of aviation and military history in general, as about the effectiveness of fighter regiments because the destruction of enemy aircraft in the air is one of the main tasks of the IA. In addition to full information on the results of the combat work of each regiment, as an application, the ratings of fighter air regiments of the Air Force of the Spacecraft and Air Defense of the Soviet-German front will be placed according to the number of enemy aircraft destroyed, primarily, of course, the air. This is not about battles with Japan in August 1945, because naval fighters. If we talk about 5 victories of the Air Force and Air Defense, then 3 of them are behind the regiments that were transferred from the West in the summer of 45. Now about the naval regiments: while there are some difficulties in a number of, first of all, the Baltic and also the Black Sea air regiments, in terms of the full picture of the results of their combat work in the war, which, in turn, does not allow making the final rating with sufficient reliability. the rating list "will include 338 fighter air regiments of the Air Force and Air Defense (172 Air Force regiments of the spacecraft," surviving "until May 9, 45th; 92 air defense regiments and 74 regiments disbanded during the war). , since a number of regiments, primarily the air defense, as well as several disbanded ones, did not have victories. At least, to date, not a single operational and reporting document has been found indicating the victories of the pilots of these air regiments. and how these lists were compiled, I will tell in part 338. I will also publish the rating lists themselves with a number of comments (more detailed than will be given in the appendix that is being prepared for work).

The main sources for determining the results of the combat work of one or another regiment, both throughout the history of the Second World War in general, and by victories in particular, can be divided into 3 groups.

1. The first group included the 172 regiment of the Air Force KA, which "survived" until 9 May 1945. In this group, everything is relatively simple and clear, because 31.05.1945 was also issued by the Air Force KA Directive No. XXUMX, which obliged all aviation regiments and individual air squadrons of all aircraft crews to submit 639734 to the Organizational-Mobilization Directorate of the Air Force KA "Summary of formation and combat work in war" by the end of June. Each regiment and a separate air squadron were supposed to give complete information, already clarified, because all the hostilities were completed, all the results were summed up, and the counts on the combat work done for the whole war, with a breakdown for each year of the war, were provided. The document was only called a “brief note”, but in fact it presented a multi-page report that included several sections: participation on fronts; combat work (the number of sorties divided by the types of tasks performed); the number of destroyed enemy aircraft (in the air and on the ground); the number of destroyed other equipment and manpower of the enemy; their own loss of aircraft (combat and non-combat) with the division into types and brands; their loss of personnel; the amount and types of ammunition consumed; the number of restored engines and aircraft; Awarded with orders and medals of the USSR personnel (as of the beginning of June 1945). The document was prepared in 4 copies, one copy each, respectively, to the regiment, to the division, to the Air Army or the District Air Force, to the KA Air Force Headquarters. But there are certain difficulties. The fact is that not all regimental and divisional funds of the TsO MO have these certificates, but they are fully available in the army funds, except for what reasons 3,4 and 7 air armies, as well as in the Air Force KA headquarters. But! The documents of the Air Force headquarters of the spacecraft to this day are not declassified, they have not yet been removed from the neck "owl." secretly. " As a result, on the 21 regiment of 172, which were part of the units indicated by me of the three air armies, I still could not see brief references, although I know where they are. The fact is that the documents of the funds of the Main and Central Administrations of the Ministry of Defense can be declassified only by representatives of these departments (in this case, the General Staff of the Russian Air Force). Last time was in the summer of 2006. After the start of the so-called reform of the Armed Forces, in 2007 and later years, there was simply no one to deal with this issue, they shortened the people. And the archive itself has not yet received the right to declassify these documents, its powers end at the front-line level. Therefore, for the twenty-one regiments, the data was formed on the basis of Historical Forms, although, as practice has shown, most of the forms of the regiments, percent 75-80, are still not entirely accurate, since information was entered in stages, even during the conduct of hostilities, when not all data were specified. As an example, the 157 form iap: step-by-step maintenance of it gives when summing up 320 victories, while at the same time concluding the section "participating in battles and campaigns" without any reference to anything and without any other numbers, a record suddenly appears - over the years of war shot down the enemy's 422 !!!

2. The second group included the 92 Fighter Aviation Regiment. Here, too, at first glance, everything is quite simple: 4.07.1945 issued the Air Force Fighter Aviation Directive No. 1420956 Directive "On the Outcomes of Combat Activity for the Great Patriotic War." Each regiment and compound had to submit final reports to the headquarters of the air defense fighter aircraft in the prescribed form. The form was significantly different from the brief information in the Air Force KA, but allowed in full measure to judge the combat work done. But in this group of regiments the problem is that not all the regimental and compound funds have these reports, but only on the order of 60-65 percent. But there are no funds of air defense associations of the times of the war, as well as the Fund of the IA headquarters of the Air Defense Forces, there is only the post-war fund of the Air Defense Forces of the country starting from 1961, (of course, it is still classified today). Therefore, with respect to the remaining 35-40 percent of the regiments, they had to use data from historical forms, as well as operational documents and current reporting of the connections that included the indicated shelves.

3. And finally, the third group consisted of the 74 regiment disbanded during the war. This is the most difficult group, primarily due to the fact that the funds of many regiments are completely absent or contain only documents of party and Komsomol organizations. Also for the 1941-1942 period, it is also characterized by the fact that the funds of the formations, which included regiments with an insufficiently developed system of monthly reporting on the results of combat work, were not entirely complete. Therefore, for the third group, we had to use many sources - these were operational reports, reports of various structures (formations, air forces of the armies and fronts, air groups), submissions for conversion into guards or for awarding part of the order, reserve documents of aviation divisions and air regiments (due to the fact that that in 1941-1942, because of the practice of completing the shelves of young people not firing and throwing them without proper training into battle, where the shelves burned down like a match, for one to three weeks, after which the remaining 2-3 of the aircraft and XNU The MX-1 pilots were transferred to another regiment, and the control and regimental headquarters were again sent to the reserve regiment for re-staffing, as a rule, the command of these regiments made reports on short-term stays on the front for the reserve regiment, and, in some cases, award documents on regiment commanders, as sometimes the only source of obtaining a more or less complete picture, for example, 4 iap. As a result, this group of regiments still has certain gaps in the completeness of information on the results of combat work.

Now, when the main sources are identified, from which the final data were taken, which served also for the preparation of the rating list of regimental effectiveness, it is possible to proceed to the rating itself. It is composed according to the principle of decreasing the number of victories: the number of the regiment is given (in case it is a guards regiment, then its number is given in brackets before the conversion; just as if the regiment changed the number); then comes the number of downed enemy aircraft; the next figure, in parentheses, is the total number of enemy aircraft destroyed, including those destroyed and on the ground; and the last figures indicate the total number of sorties made by the pilots of this regiment. If necessary, then there are additional comments.

The topic is extremely interesting, it’s somehow clumsily disclosed - but it’s not just for one monograph of materials ...

The topic is really necessary and useful, it is not clear why the author is trying to put such a voluminous topic into a couple of sheets. Now there is no problem to establish the combat path of any unit or compound. Most archives are available. In my opinion it was more interesting to read about a specific fact. A simple listing of the regiments does not carry information.

The thankless task is to delve into the archives. Author +. Of course, it’s even harder to find the ratio that your own — alien, especially an airplane model. If there are no problems now, to establish the combat path of the unit is half-truth. According to the award sheets, it is written in which area a particular person fought directly (again, if the award unit doesn’t at best, you know where the army or the front was at that moment), but with what weapons, for example, on which plane, the tank didn’t write it, secretly.

Bet you haven't looked at these books? Otherwise, you would not say that ...
These are very original books and it is not in vain that such teams of authors worked on them ....

I heard about a different calculation, some of the opponents, they say, counted the downed engines
I can’t vouch for correctness, but it’s very similar

      31 January 2012 22: 43
It is a historical fact that in the Luftwaffe the calculation was carried out by engines, i.e. a downed 4-engine bomber added +4. Therefore, there were "aces of diamonds" who had more than 300 "crosses".
