Thales and Steyr Mannlicher signed a cooperation agreement
Under the agreement, both companies will deepen their long-standing cooperation in the military markets, and Thales Australia will take on the formal leadership in Australia and New Zealand. Their joint research and development activities, the overall supply system, and the streamlining of services provided will benefit customers.
Thales Australia Chief Executive Chris Jenkins stated: "This agreement is a continuation of the evolution of our Soldier Systems business. Steyr Mannlicher has a long history and global market prospects, which, combined with our experience in the supply and modernization of small arms, will enable us to jointly develop our extensive knowledge and offer our customers cost-effective solutions ... In both companies, weapons designers and world-class experts work together to make our advantages even more convincing. We have invested heavily in weapons development in Australia and are committed to promoting Australian innovations to the rest of the world through Steyr Mannlicher. The current development of the next generation of weapons in the LAND 125 3C program is the latest example of the innovative work done in the city of Lithgow. "
Thales Australia and Steyr Mannlicher are working together to supply assault rifles from 1986 of the year. Since then, they have continuously improved the characteristics of weapons, including the integration of a wide range of additional accessories. The SA2 currently in service confirms the successful development of their cooperation.
Over the past few years, Thales Australia has gained considerable experience in the precise manufacture of small arms at a Thales-owned company located in Lithgow, in New South Wales. It offers a wide range of services, including development, design, procurement, logistics and project management. The company also supports a number of third-party weapons currently used by the Australian defense forces.
