Air "Centaur"

2

With the adoption of the Airborne Forces of the main combat vehicle BMD-1 and the armored personnel carrier of the landing armored carrier BTR-D on its base, the idea of landing personnel inside the combat vehicle appeared. The new efficient vehicles were successfully used by paratroopers on large-scale tactical exercises: they received them from the sky, "re-started" and entered into a "battle" on them. The most modern - BMD-4 - is called a digital machine: satellite navigation, computer fire control system ...

The BMD-4 airborne combat vehicle is a modernized version of the BMD-3 (created in KB VGTZ, adopted for use in 1990) and the further development of the family of Russian airborne combat vehicles. The new BMD-3, which appeared earlier on the pages of publications under the designation BMD-4M, is an air transportable combat tracked amphibious vehicle, which can be parachuted and parachuted with personnel inside or without it. The BMD-4 was put into service in 2004, and its arrival in units of the Russian Airborne Forces was planned for the 2005 year. Currently, there is a mass production of this machine. As reported, in the future, all previously released BMD-3 will be upgraded to BMD-4.

The main goal of the modernization of the vehicle was to replace the full-time combat compartment (borrowed from the BMP-2) with a new unified combat compartment (combat module) for the light-armored Bakhcha-U equipment, which was created under the modernization program of the BMP-3. Thus, an 3-mm gun, which can fire both with various-purpose projectiles and laser-guided anti-tank guided missiles, was installed in the BMD-30 100-mm automatic cannon that was already in the turret. The mass of the unified combat module "Bakhcha-U" is 3,2 ... 3,98 tons, and its mass production is organized in Tula at the state unitary enterprise "Instrument Design Bureau" (KBP).

Like all previous vehicles of this series, the BMD-4 is designed to transport the personnel of the airborne troops, increasing their mobility, armament and security on the battlefield. It provides for the maintenance of maneuverable offensive and defensive actions with autonomous use and in cooperation with other types of weapons.

According to its layout, the BMD-4 is completely identical to the BMD-3 due to the fact that the chassis and the armored hull of these machines are the same. In the forward part of the hull there is a control compartment with a driver’s seat and, to the right and to the left of it, two places for paratroopers (there is a ball mount for the right-wing frontal armor plate, and the AG-17 grenade launcher is removed), followed by a two-seat circular tower with the main armament in which the commander of the vehicle and the gunner are placed. Behind the tower there is a branch on three paratroopers who can dismount through the aft hatch. The troop compartment has onboard embrasures and viewing devices for firing from personal weapons. In the stern there is the engine-transmission compartment, in which the engine is installed, the cooling system of which is located in the side compartments, and water-jet propulsion units.

The hull and turret BMD-4 - welded, made of aluminum armor, providing anti-bullet protection for the crew and landing force. Frontal projections of the tower, in addition, reinforced by spaced steel sheets. The anti-mine (anti-explosive) durability of the vehicle remained at the BMD-3 level (including individual universal seats for the entire combat crew, which are attached not to the bottom, but to the roof of the hull). An additional means of protection are triple-barreled system installation "Cloud" to launch smoke grenades, located on both sides of the tower.

The armament complex of the machine provides effective destruction of enemy ground and air targets, and the 100-mm gun provides direct fire and closed firing positions. The weapons of the Bakhcha-U combat module include a 100-mm gun-launcher 2А70 with a single automatic loader for all types of shots (OFS, KS and ATGM), 30-mm automatic gun 2А72 and an 7,62-mm gun paired with it and a X-gun. in a single unit. Ammunition mechanized combat packs are 34 100-mm shots, including 4 ATGM, 350 30-mm shots to the automatic cannon and 2000 7,62-mm ammunition to the twin machine gun. In addition, there are six spare 81-mm smoke smoke grenades ZD6 (ЗД6М) for smoke grenade launchers.
The firing range of the 9М117М1 “Arkan” anti-tank complex consists of 5500 m octopes, 100-mm fragmentation-high-explosive shots (ZUOF19, ZOOF17) - up to 7000 m, 30-mm shots - up to ZNOF4000), I see ZnOX2500), and 4-mm shots - up to ZNOX6, I’m of the campaign, I’ll be brought up to XNUMX m, XNUMX-mm shots - up to XNUMX m; Punch"). The gun is loaded and the sleeves are ejected by an automatic conveyor loader, which eliminates gas pollution inside the machine and ensures that the gun is loaded during XNUMX-XNUMX c.

The BMD-4 automatic fire control system includes a highly accurate, dual-stabilized gunner's sight with thermal and distance measuring channels, a tele-and thermal automatic target tracking, 2-plane weapon stabilizer and a digital ballistic computer, as well as an atmosphere parameter sensor. This allows the commander and the gunner to conduct effective shooting from the spot and in motion (including afloat) day and night at ground and air targets with high accuracy.

In addition to all the BMD-4 is equipped with a collective system of protection against weapons of mass destruction with a filter-ventilation unit, high-speed fire-fighting equipment, as well as modern means of communication and navigation. Commander version of the machine BMD-4K has an additional radio station and specially equipped places.
The car is equipped with a four-stroke, six-cylinder diesel engine with a gas turbine supercharged 2B06-2 with a power 450 hp. liquid cooling and opposite arrangement of cylinders. Transmission hydromechanical, independent suspension hydropneumatic, with variable (within 400 mm) ground clearance. The rear wheel drive chassis consists (on board) of 5 single-pitched road wheels and 4 supporting rollers. The maximum speed of the movement is 70 km / h, power reserve - 500 km (450 liters. Fuel). For movement on water with a speed of 10 km / h (in case of agitation up to 3 points), the BMD-4 is equipped with two hydrojet water jet propellers with power take-off from the main engine and a folding breakdown plate.

I want the comet to be given only by those who served and fired from the car. I saw this car as a cadet back in the glorious 90. I can imagine what it is, but I wanted it all first hand.

As far as I understand, there are BMD-4 described in the article and BMD-4M (new body and chassis and 80% unification of parts with BMP-3). The number of these vehicles in the Airborne Forces is scanty (from open sources, from one hundred to three hundred with something). As for the BMD-4M, they generally received only an installation batch for testing. Airborne landing systems (parachute systems) have not yet been developed for either BMD-4 or BMD-4M. Popovkin said last year that the machine will not be accepted into service (it is not entirely clear whether he meant the BMD-4, BMD-4M, or both).
