The international ministerial meeting will be held today with the participation of the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and other regional powers.
“The directions of discussions in Lausanne are understandable - this is the cessation of violence in Syria, the fight against terrorists, the provision of humanitarian access for the needy population and the immediate start of a political process involving all Syrian groups - both the government and all the opposition, without preliminary conditions” - Lavrov told reporters.
“This, strictly speaking, is such a line, it is not some Russian, this, I repeat, is the decision of the international community,” he noted.
“The situation is not simple, and Russia intends to speak in Lausanne from an honest, clean position. We will propose concrete steps that are necessary for the resolutions of the Security Council (UN) to be implemented, for the Russian-American agreements to be implemented. And let's see how the Americans and our regional (partners) will react, ”said the minister.
Russia will not put forward any new initiatives.
“We will not offer anything else. The resolution is all very specifically written. I do not feel any special expectations. We want to work specifically and see to what extent our partners are ready to implement the resolution of the Security Council (UN), ”he added.
Earlier, Zakharova reported that in Lausanne, “Sergey Lavrov’s bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry is possible and likely to take place.” According to her, “holding bilateral meetings is an integral part of a multi-format discussion” of the Syrian issue.
She noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation proceeds from the fact that if the “Lausanne” negotiations succeed, “real preconditions will be created for the resumption of the political process of internal Syrian settlement.” But for this, “all the major players will need to undertake certain obligations and, of course, to carry out appropriate work with the forces present on the ground to ensure the impeccable observance of the terms of the truce by all parties,” Zakharova stressed.
