New information about the armored car "Typhoon Airborne" appeared thanks to the latest publications of the blog of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, as well as the business electronic newspaper of Tatarstan "Business-Online". In their newest articles, some details of the development and technical appearance of promising technology are mentioned. In addition, other information about the new development, its prospects, etc. are given. Published data can significantly update the existing picture and add new details to it.
It is reported that the armored car "Typhoon Airborne" received the designation KHNUMX. Earlier, armored cars from Naberezhnye Chelny had in their designations the name of the KamAZ automobile plant, but now it is being replaced with the only letter “K”. It is assumed that such a change in designation is associated with the desire of the Kama Automobile Plant to distance itself from military projects. In addition, the actual work on the new project is being carried out by the Plant of Special Automobiles, which is directly related to the Remdizel OAO, a subsidiary of KamAZ.
The development of an armored car for the Airborne Forces began at the end of last year and was completed in record time. In November, 2015, the customer and the contractor signed a contract for the creation of a promising machine, and in just five months the first prototype came out for testing. The project had special requirements directly related to the intended use of equipment. So, it was necessary to provide the possibility of parachute landing, as well as provide protection against small weapons and min. In addition, there were demands regarding the comfort of the crew and the landing.
Some technical details of the project have become known. Perspective armored vehicle K4386 "Typhoon Airborne", in contrast to the previous machines of his family, is not equipped with a frame for the installation of the main units. In connection with the requirements concerning the possibility of landing, it was decided to use a supporting armored body with the installation of all units on its mounting. Among other things, such an architecture has made it possible to achieve a noticeable reduction in mass: the Typhoon Airborne is about tons of 2 lighter than the K53949 two-axle armored vehicle.
The armored body is built on the hood layout and has a common habitable compartment that combines the offices of command and landing. Reservation security level not specified. Judging by the individual references of officials, we are talking about the fifth class of protection according to domestic standards. This will provide protection against most types of small arms used by the conditional adversary. Measures have also been taken to increase protection against explosive devices. In the corresponding openings of the hull are installed armored glass of the required shapes and sizes, allowing to observe the road and the surrounding terrain without the risk of injury.
The already used body shape, modified in accordance with the use of the supporting structure, is used. To protect the engine used hood faceted with a front grille. On the side, the engine is protected by inclined armor plates, to which the wheel arches are connected. The project provides for a habitable compartment with a complex-shaped body. Its front part is characterized by side compartments with door openings, while the central and aft have large niches for mounting wheel arches and fuel tanks. Above the tanks and arches, respectively, are placed niches that are available to accommodate certain units, including for the transportation of payload. In the aft of these niches are the volumes for additional cargo. Aft cargo compartments extend beyond the boundaries of the armored corps, forming a corridor for the landing of troops.
A diesel engine with an 350 horsepower, hp, fits under a protected hull hood. According to the latest data, the engine of the Cummins company, manufactured under license in Russia, is used as the basis of the power plant. Used biaxial all-wheel drive chassis. The available engine allows the 11-ton armored vehicle to reach speeds of up to 105 km / h and travel on one refueling station to 1200 km.
Existing samples of the armored car "Typhoon Airborne" is equipped with a set of hatches and doors for embarkation and disembarkation. The front jobs of the habitable compartment, intended for the driver and commander, have their own side doors of the automobile type. The troop compartment is equipped with a single aft door that opens to the left in the direction of travel. The volume of the habitable compartment behind the driver and the commander is given for the placement of weapons and troops. The support device of the combat module is installed in the central part of the vehicle. It is a structure of complex shape, occupying the space from floor to ceiling of the compartment. On the device cover there are hatches for access to the internal units. In addition, the screen and the control panel of the combat module are installed on it.
A vertical support inside the hull is used to install a promising combat module. As a weapon system on the K4386 armored cars, a remote-controlled combat module with cannon and machine gun weapons is installed. From the available data, it follows that this is a combat module, presented by the Petrel Research Institute at the recent Army-2016 forum. Inside the case of a characteristic polygonal shape is placed a swinging installation with an 30-mm automatic cannon. The paired machine gun is taken out in a separate casing, hinged on the left side of the module. Also, the combat module is equipped with smoke grenade launchers and an optoelectronic unit.
Behind the support of the combat module are places for paratroopers. In connection with the requirement to increase the level of protection, the troop compartment of the armored car is equipped with seats that absorb part of the explosion energy under the wheel or bottom of the hull. In a similar chair should be located the driver and commander. An interesting innovation in the troop compartment is the device for fastening the personal weapons of fighters. Between the landing chairs placed special mounts, which should be transported machines of existing models. The design of the mount provides reliable retention weapons in various circumstances.
According to reports, by the middle of this year, the enterprise “Plant of Special Automobiles” built the first prototype of a promising armored vehicle. Later, new prototypes appeared. Due to the lack of ready-made combat modules, the initially experienced Typhoons-Airborne Forces were equipped with complex-shaped units that served as weight simulators. In mid-August, photographs appeared showing experimental equipment with standard weapon systems. Already at the beginning of June, the experienced airborne troops were shown to the command of the airborne troops.
As follows from recent publications, the overall appearance of a promising armored car for the Airborne Forces has already been formed and is unlikely to undergo major changes. Nevertheless, the project is still being finalized and improved. Some adjustments should be made according to the test results, others - due to the need to change the configuration. Of particular importance is the localization of production. It is reported that in the case of the experienced technique, the localization level reached 50% in terms of cost. The level of localization of different units is different. For example, for the "mine" chairs, this parameter is declared at the level of 80%. When launching mass production, it is planned to bring the overall degree of localization to 70-80% by mastering the production of some new units and replacing certain products of foreign manufacture.
In the context of the localization of production, the Business-Online edition cites the words of automotive journalist Alexander Privalov. He notes that the foreign engine was not created under the requirements of the Russian Ministry of Defense, and also doubts that it was possible to achieve one hundred percent localization in its production. However, this issue can be resolved. There are also problems with the suspension. In the previous project К53949 "Typhoonian" an attempt was made to use the aggregates of the Dutch production due to the lack of domestic ones. Kama Automobile Plant has already begun work on hydropneumatic suspensions. In addition, KamAZ proposes to begin the development of automatic transmissions with automatic control. Previously, domestic enterprises did not deal with these topics. “But in the end, they all the same realized that they would have to do it themselves, that not a single burzhuin on a saucer would bring a ready-made solution,” concludes A. In parallel with the increase in the degree of localization, the authors of the project will have to carry out all the necessary equipment tests. The first checks, reportedly, took place in the spring of this year, soon after the completion of the assembly of the first prototype. Then it was planned to hold new stages of testing. So, in September they had to undergo pile testing, the purpose of which was to check the car when it was reset from a certain height. With the help of such procedures, the possibility of parachute landing without damage to the structure is confirmed. In the future, after completion of the factory tests, the state will begin. The timing of their start has not yet been clarified.
There are suggestions about the future of new technology. Sufficiently high performance and the possibility of landing with the use of parachute systems makes the armored car K4386 "Typhoon Airborne" a good fighting vehicle for the airborne troops. As a result, after completion of state tests, an order may appear for the supply of a large number of serial equipment, which will be distributed between a significant number of airborne units.
In its current form, the Typhoon Airborne Troops armored car is a wheeled combat vehicle capable of transporting fighters with weapons, as well as supporting them with cannon and machine gun fire. In this case, there is reason to believe that in the future, new versions of armored vehicles for the airborne troops may be created on the basis of the K4386 project. The characteristics and architecture of the armored car make it possible to build commanders and ambulances, as well as equipment with combat modules of various types that carry a variety of weapons.
The most important feature of the project "Typhoon Airborne Troops", which should be noted, is the development of commissioned airborne troops and in accordance with their requirements. Due to this, the design of the armored car was adapted to the intended use. In addition, the use of some ready-made ideas and solutions simplified both the development and future production of new equipment.

The newest design of the armored car K4386 "Typhoon Airborne" was created in the framework of the ongoing program of rearmament of the army. Earlier, the command of the airborne troops repeatedly noted that the rearmament of this type of armed forces would be completed in the 2018 year. In addition, last year, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced plans to improve the combat capability of the Airborne Forces and their modernization as a rapid reaction force. As recent events show, soon the nomenclature of new weapons and equipment for the landing troops will be supplemented with promising models.
Currently, the base of the fleet of military equipment of the Airborne Forces is made up of old types of armored vehicles, primarily airborne combat vehicles of the first and second models, as well as armored personnel carriers. Not so long ago, the start-up deliveries of new BMD-4M and BTR-MDM to a certain extent influenced the situation, but the amount of equipment built so far does not allow for a fundamental change in the existing state of affairs. The appearance of wheeled combat vehicles with cannon-machine gun weapons can affect the overall condition of the fleet of vehicles, ensuring a higher rate of rearmament.
The program of rearmament of the armed forces in general and of the airborne troops in particular continues. To increase the combat capabilities of the troops, a large number of new projects of equipment and weapons are being created. In the foreseeable future, the armored car K4386 "Typhoon Airborne" will have to become a new vehicle. In the near future, he must pass all the necessary tests, after which the issue of adopting equipment for weapons will be considered. In the meantime, the specialists of the developer organization and the customer need to focus on checking and fine-tuning the prospective sample.
