"Police" suicide bomber blew up pilgrims in Iraq
According to the official representative of the local security forces, a suicide bomber dressed as a policeman, who also had a fake ID of a police officer, an explosive device was activated near a group of Shiite pilgrims passing through the checkpoint at the city’s border, ITAR-TASS reports.
Shiites these days are sent on foot to Karbala, the holy city for them, located south of Baghdad, to take part in the mourning ceremonies "Arbain" in memory of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, honored by them. In two weeks of Arbaine in Iraq, approximately one hundred Shiites have become victims of terrorist attacks.
The exacerbation of relations between the Sunnis and Shiites occurred after the withdrawal of the US military contingent from Iraq. Sunni politicians blamed the country's prime minister, Shiite Nuri al-Maliki, for usurping power, putting security forces under its control, not allowing rivals to control levers, and also in collusion with Iran.
Sunnis are the national minority of Iraq - approximately 35%. During the reign of Hussein in the country, they played a dominant role.
