DELTA-308 Georgian sniper rifle

In Georgia, to replace the Soviet and Israeli self-loading sniper rifles in service with the state scientific and technological center (STC) DELTA, located in Tbilisi, a new high-precision sniper rifle was created under the symbol DELTA-308. The rifle is designed for chambered 7,62x51 mm (.308 WIN). According to the Georgian side, the new rifle is superior in its capabilities to the Israeli Galatz sniper rifle of the same caliber.

History STC "Delta" began in the 1960s. In its current form, this scientific and technical center has existed only since 2010, but has already become the main producer of a wide variety of weapons in Georgia. STC combines 6 research institutes, as well as Tbilisi aviation plant. This center is state owned and is under the control of the Georgian Ministry of Defense. Today, a wide range of weapons is being developed and produced here: from small arms weapons to armored vehicles - Didgori armored vehicles, which are even exported.

Until recently, the sniper units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the armed forces and the state security services of Georgia were mainly armed with Dragunov Soviet sniper rifles, as well as IMI Galatz Israeli sniper rifles (created on the basis of the IMI Galil machine gun), which are reliable but not the most modern small arms. Taking this into account, representatives of the Georgian power structures expressed a desire to acquire modern high-precision sniper rifles, which would not be inferior to those used by advanced armies of the world today.

Along with this, equipping all sniper units with the best weapon systems from foreign manufacturers, such as McMillan or Barrett, is problematic due to the very high cost of such sniper rifles. The financial possibilities of Georgia, even despite the help from the Western allies, are very limited and allow to equip with such rifles only a few dozen, at best, a hundred trained and highly skilled snipers. That is why Delta SEC has initiated work on the development of high-precision Georgian-made rifles, which would be a cheap alternative to foreign models. Currently, the DELTA center has already created and ready for production large-sized sniper rifles PDShP-1 and PDShP-2 chambered for 12,7х108 mm, store modular rifles Satevari (in five different calibers from .308 WIN to .50 BMG), as well as a self-loading rifle DELTA -308.

The DELTA-308 sniper rifle belongs to the category of so-called "Marxman" sniper rifles (from the English Designated Marksman Rifle or abbreviated as DMR), which are designed for fire support of infantry units at medium and small distances. These rifles occupy an intermediate position between assault rifles and ordinary sniper non-self-loading rifles, the specialized information Internet portal about firearms all4shooters.com notes. Such rifles are a cheaper and mass type of high-precision small arms in comparison with rifles of highly skilled snipers from special forces units.

The sniper rifle was designed by the designer of the STC DELTA Georgy Sukhiashvili (he is also the creator of the SMG-9 submachine gun currently undergoing tests). Rifle DELTA-308 built on a modular principle. In addition to tactical use, the rifle can be used for sporting purposes. DELTA-308 (also known as “Delta Tactical”), like the vast majority of “Marxman” rifles, was built on the basis of an assault rifle, using in its design the ideology of AR-10 / AR-15 assault rifles designed by Eugene Stoner.
Automation sniper rifle gas type, it is similar to that used in the famous American carbine M4. At the same time, the reloading handle of the weapon is also located, like on the Stoner assault rifles, in the rear upper part of the receiver, which makes it possible to retract the bolt back not only with the right, but with the left hand. Despite this, such a solution in this particular case cannot be called too successful, since the eyepiece of an installed optical system under stress can become an obstacle for the shooter and prevent the rifle from reloading quickly.

Also, as in all modern assault rifles of the M16 / AR-15 family, on the right side of the receiver is a lever-rammer, which allows you to send the bolt to the front position when it is not profitable when the weapon is contaminated, for example. The sniper rifle barrel is free-hung, its length is 508 mm, the same barrel length of the Israeli IMI Galatz sniper rifle, which is similar to many Marxman rifles of the same caliber (M110, R11, HK 417, SR-25 / Mk11). According to the manufacturer’s information, the rifle provides the following shooting accuracy - dispersion on 100 meters does not exceed 0,5 MOA.

The DELTA-308 sniper rifle is powered from plastic box magazines designed for 10 or 20 rounds. The rifle is equipped with adjustable folding bipod. The stock also has an adjustable butt pad and cheek, and an additional folding leg-handle is attached to it from below, which allows the shooter to put the weapon on three supports at once. A feature of this Georgian sniper rifle is the "sport" semi-orthopedic pistol grip, which is similar to the German-made Heckler & Koch PSG 1 sniper rifle grip.

The rifle can be equipped with standardized Picatinny trims MIL-STD-1913 on 3, 6, 9 and 12 watches, which allow the shooter to install various designs of mechanical and optical sights on the weapon, as well as various tactical accessories. The DELTA-308 sniper rifle presented in public was equipped with a variable-magnification Walther ZF3-9x40 rifle scope. The sight is durable, reliable and inexpensive, it is one of the most budget models of optics of this class. At the same time, the Walther ZF3-9x40 sight is equipped with backlight reticle illumination and parallax detuning.

According to customer requirements, the rifle can be made according to its individual wishes or with a different barrel length. The total length of the sniper rifle - 995 mm, weight - 5,6 kg. The declared cost of weapons currently amounts to 2800 dollars, which is significantly less than that of the IMI Galatz sniper rifles that were removed from the IDF and acquired by the Georgian army. According to some reports, these rifles were purchased from Israel after the August 2008 war of the year at a price of around 7 thousand dollars apiece. It is reported that in the case of the organization of mass production of DELTA-308 sniper rifles and the wholesale purchase of all necessary components, the cost of the weapon can be further reduced.

DELTA-308 performance characteristics:
Caliber - 7,62 mm.
Chuck - 7,62x51 mm (.308 WIN)
Length - 995 mm.
Barrel length - 508 mm.
Weight - 5,6 kg.
Power system - box magazines on 10 or 20 cartridges.

It may be so, it’s only the use of a powerful cartridge of 7,62 mm caliber, silencer, bipod and adjustable emphasis under the butt, as well as excellent optics makes this weapon a pretty strong argument in skillful hands, but the question of reliability remains open ...

Well, judging by how their vaunted Didgori armored vehicles fell apart from the Saudis in Yemen, the weapons they produce are also questionable. Although outwardly, the weapon looks very impressive, but the question remains about the barrel resource and accuracy of this "high-precision" weapon ..

Cool development !! In the US, people in their home workshops produce such designs, or even more abruptly.

In the home workshop, the barrel cannot be machined and the parts cannot be adjusted exactly.

Rather, a constructor. The network has instructions and ready-made programs for a 3D printer, the rest is freely sold in specialized stores (trunks, stores, USM, etc.). Anyone can assemble an assault rifle without any problems.

Hekler’s motives are noticeable in the design and this is understandable, as Georgian designers already have experience copying their products, inside, apparently, closer to the M110. What exactly did the designer of this product do? There is not only nothing new, but even some rethinking of the well-known construction is not even visible.

Hechler "car" is serious, but what will "DELTA" be? Copies are often inferior to the original. Regarding Didguria: that he applied to Yemen is not yet an indicator: maybe the mechanic was consortium? Although if you recall the "miracle of the Georgian car industry" Kolkhida ", it is also a" mountain tractor "(old drivers will understand) or a color TV" Iveria "(it seems to be made from" Tauros "). So skepticism is appropriate here

It seems that in this case we are not talking about innovation at all, but about launching a relatively inexpensive sample of our own production in a series. To close a niche, so to speak. It is unlikely that this thing will be exported, except to the neighbors.

Touches =) "Just like in all modern assault rifles of the M16 / AR-15 family, on the right side of the receiver there is a rammer lever, which makes it possible to send the bolt to the front position when it is not working in the case when the weapon, for example , contaminated. "

Mono bipods were shorter and no need to sculpt this crap on the butt. So and so you have to hold the butt with your left hand. And lower will be the power of a sniper.

M-16 caliber 7,62, even this crap is the same "a rammer lever, which makes it possible to send the bolt to the forward position when it is not working in the event that the weapon, for example, is contaminated". Only, if I remember correctly, on the M-16 the first cartridge from the store is skewing, for this there is also a button, send the cartridge. And given the flimsy design of the M-16, we can assume that this rifle is not hardy. Would buy our SVD and did not bathe.

The main issue is reliability, in other respects the rifle looks pretty good. The AR-15 scheme has a rather low resistance to pollution, because the gaps between the parts are very small, and the powder gases are fed directly into the receiver. There are very big doubts about the quality of weapons production in Georgia, unless it is a question of a simple assembly of rifles from foreign components.

Small gaps? This is the reason for failure in the event of contamination! AK is distinguished as a reliable weapon. Though in the swamp dive with him, even in a puddle. Shutter jerked and shoot! At the training camp, AK-74 came across, allegedly from conservation. You pull the shutter, dust is pouring from there! But it works! And not any rust. Do Georgians have weapons steel production?
