Armored car "Arlan" (Kazakhstan / South Africa)

26
Not having the experience of creating modern military equipment with high performance, many countries are forced to buy foreign products. If you have your own production or the possibility of its deployment, it becomes possible to acquire a license for the construction of foreign-made equipment. It is this approach that the army of Kazakhstan plans to use in the planned rearmament. In the near future, the Kazakh armed forces will have to receive several types of equipment, including Arlan armored cars.

In recent years, wishing to re-equip the army, official Astana has concluded several contracts with the Paramount Group (South Africa). The foreign company has extensive experience in the creation of modern armored vehicles, and also offers potential buyers several military vehicles for various purposes. Paramount Group projects managed to interest the military of Kazakhstan, resulting in the emergence of agreements on the creation of a joint venture with the subsequent deployment of the production of several types of equipment. In the near future it is planned to begin the assembly of three samples of armored vehicles for various purposes.

One of the foreign models, who managed to interest the customer in the face of Kazakhstan, was the Marauder armored car. This armored car was created by the Paramount Group in the middle of the last decade and soon entered the series. In the future, this development was the subject of several contracts for the construction and supply of finished equipment. In total, overseas customers received several hundred armored cars. One of the buyers of this technology was Kazakhstan. Especially for the Kazakh army was created an updated version of the armored vehicle, modified in accordance with the climatic features of the country of the customer. Now Kazakhstan intends to independently assemble the required equipment.

A few years ago, the companies Paramount Group and Kazakhstan Engineering signed an agreement on the establishment of a joint venture Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering, where it was proposed to start the production of equipment under license. In December last year, the plant was commissioned. To date, the company has collected a number of new types of equipment. While the plant is forced to use a large number of components of foreign production, however, in the future it is planned to significantly increase the degree of localization. The possibility of expanding production with the creation of new equipment or the release of licensed machines for export to third countries was also mentioned.

One of the types of products of the new plant was the armored car "Arlan" ("Wolf"), which is a modified Marauder car from Paramount Group. In accordance with the wishes of the customer, the company-developer has slightly changed the initial project, which allowed to adapt the equipment in accordance with the expected operating conditions in Kazakhstan. At the same time, the general features of the car remained without significant changes. A number of such armored vehicles have already been released in South Africa on the request of Kazakhstan. Now the release of equipment will be carried out by Kazakhstan independently.

Armored Car Marauder / "Arlan" is a multi-purpose protected vehicle that can solve various transport and combat missions. Both in the original and in the final form for Kazakhstan, an armored car is able to transport fighters with weapons or cargo, providing combat work units. In addition, there is the possibility of patrolling specified areas, escorting convoys to protect them from ambushes, etc. Also, the developer offered several specialized versions of the armored car.

At the request of the customer, an armored medical or command-staff vehicle can be manufactured, as well as a self-propelled anti-tank missile system or an infantry fire fighting vehicle. A prototype of a special police vehicle, designed for use in urban environments during the suppression of riots, was built and shown. In all such modifications, the same armored car is used, receiving a different set of special equipment.

According to the Paramount Group, the Marauder armored vehicle is built on the basis of an armored hull and does not have the frame needed to install one or another equipment. Power plant, transmission elements, chassis, etc. attached directly to the carrying armored hull. This allowed a certain extent to reduce the size and weight of the machine. In addition, the opportunity to maximize protection.

The presented case has a spaced reservation and corresponds to the level 3 of the standard STANAG 4569. This means that the armored vehicle is able to protect the crew from 7,62 mm armor-piercing rifle bullets, as well as from explosive devices with a charge of 8 kg under the wheel or bottom. Moreover, it is argued that the case withstands 12,7-mm bullets without an armor-piercing core. The engine compartment grilles have a weaker structure and can withstand only 7,62-mm automatic bullets. The possibility of equipping an armored car with additional booking modules, with which the level of protection is displayed at the required level, is declared.

The body of the armored car "Arlan" has a bonnet layout and is divided into two main compartments. The front compartment of a smaller size is designed to install the engine and some elements of the transmission. Other hull volumes are for accommodation of the crew and the landing force or cargo. On the sides of the hull, outside of it, are placed several casings to accommodate some devices and boxes for property. This allows you to carry the required cargo, as well as the reasonable use of the internal volumes of the protected enclosure.

The engine compartment of the hull is covered in front with armor plates with grilles for air supply to the radiator. The characteristic shape of the frontal part of the body, formed by several parts, gives the armored car a recognizable appearance. The top cover of the engine compartment is located at an angle to the horizontal. It also provides ventilation holes. The bottom of the engine compartment is covered with a V-shaped bottom, used to protect against the explosion of min. A similar design has the bottom of the habitable compartment.

Inhabited case compartment has a traditional layout for this technique. In the front part there are places for the driver and the commander, the rest of the volume is given under the troop compartment. To monitor the surrounding space, the crew can use a set of windows, which include armored glass. In the version for Kazakhstan, the Marauder / Arlan armored car has one or two windshields (in the second case, a central pillar separating the individual windows is used), complex windows in the side doors, two windows in the stern sides, and a window in the aft door. According to the manufacturer, the glazing of the armored car corresponds to the body as a whole in terms of protection.

The original Marauder project provided for the use of various engines that meet specific requirements. In the case of the Arlan armored car, the power plant was chosen based on the turbocharged engine of the American company Cummins with the power of 300 hp. The engine mates with an Allison 3000SP automatic transmission that distributes torque to all drive wheels. The existing power plant should provide the highway traffic at speeds up to 120 km / h. Power reserve - 700 km. Also, the armored car can cross ford water bodies up to 0,9 m in depth, climb 60% steepness or move with roll to 35%, cross trenches 0,85 m wide and climb the 0,5 m high wall. t.

In front of the roof of the habitable compartment there is a place for the installation of the combat module. The design of the armored vehicle allows the use of existing and future combat modules with remote control, carrying machine guns of various types, including large-caliber. Armored vehicles "Arlan" of Kazakh production should receive combat modules with a large-caliber machine gun NSVT. The module has opto-electronic equipment, mechanical drives and a remote control system. The control is carried out using the remote control installed in the cabin.

The own crew of an armored car consists of only two people: the driver and the commander-gunner. They are located in the front of the habitable compartment and are responsible for managing all major assets. In the aft troop compartment of an armored car there are eight landing chairs located at the sides of the hull. For additional protection against explosions, chairs are used that absorb part of the explosion energy. The driver and the commander can fall into place with the help of "car" side doors. The landing party is invited to use the door opened to the side. For greater convenience of dismounting and landing, there are steps under the doors or small ladders.

The Republic of South Africa, where the Marauder armored car was developed, and Kazakhstan, where it is planned to operate such equipment, are distinguished by the characteristic features of the climate, which place special demands on technology. For this reason, both in the original and in the modified version, the machine is equipped with an air conditioner with a power of 14 kW. The heat exchangers and fans of this device are located in the aft part of the onboard cases-covers. With the help of the air conditioner, the crew and landing force can work in comfortable conditions at ambient temperatures up to + 45 ° C.

The composition of the electronic equipment of the armored car is selected in accordance with the requirements of the customer. The car is offered to equip with communication systems and controls of the required type. During the construction of equipment of specialized modifications, such as a command and control vehicle, additional devices of the corresponding models should be installed inside and outside the hull.

In its basic configuration, the Arlan has a length of 6,44 m, width of 2,66 m and height of the roof of the 2,745 m. Curb weight, depending on the configuration, equipment, weapons, etc., can vary from 11 to 13,5 t. Together with the useful load up to 4 t combat weight of the armored car can reach 17 t.

Since the end of last year, Marauder / Arlan armored vehicles are assembled in Kazakhstan and delivered to the customer in the person of the army. In the near future, the Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering plant should master the production of some other models of foreign-made armored vehicles. In the meantime, the army receives only the same type of machine.

New armored cars are transferred to the armed forces, as well as from time to time shown at exhibitions of weapons and military equipment. The most recent venues for the Arlan show are the KADEX-2016 and Army-2016 exhibitions in Astana and Kubinka, respectively. In addition, some photos were published from the workshops of the manufacturer. Interestingly, over the past time, the industry of Kazakhstan has managed to master the manufacture of several versions of an armored car, differing from each other in the design of various elements.

Earlier it was reported that in the future, the joint venture Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering could master the production of Marauder / Arlan armored vehicles in the interests of third countries. At the beginning of summer, representatives of the Kazakh defense industry mentioned that a new type of armored vehicles had already managed to attract the attention of several foreign armies. In this regard, over the next five years it is planned to begin production of “Arlanov” not only for themselves, but also for foreign customers. The countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States are considered as the first foreign buyers of technology. Also, the interest in armored cars managed to show the unnamed countries of the Middle East.

Despite the limited production capabilities and the lack of its own school of designing armored vehicles, Kazakhstan needs new models of combat vehicles of various classes. A few years ago, a solution was found to the existing problem, which consisted in cooperation with a company from far abroad. To date, the joint work of specialists from Kazakhstan and the Republic of South Africa has led to the army receiving a certain number of armored cars of licensed assembly. According to current plans, deliveries of Arlan cars will continue in the future. In addition, over the next few years, the industry will have to master the licensed assembly of some other types of modern armored vehicles.

The video attached to the article is reluctant to see ??? Well, tolerate 2 minutes and 11 seconds, and then comment on scribbling. Or is it unbearable to be the first to check in? It’s quite a decent machine.

It seems like a closed one, I can just judge by enthusiastic tweets, see from those present and not a big article in our press.

And in the video why is he riding on the asphalt? This is an army MCI, with which one of the best in the world and its cross-country ability is appropriate. But he also has a serious DBMS, judging by the distance to the targets, excellent OMS and stabilization.

In 2004, I wrote the futuristic story "The Beginning of the End". http://www.apn-nn.ru/pub_s/1497.html
Sent it to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on February 1 2005 of the year. Despite the fact that this is history, the light combat wheeled vehicle described there is still relevant.
    Let me explain why:
It is simpler and cheaper (this is its main idea). Based on the chassis of an SUV (price issue).
All combat vehicles being created today have the capacity to accommodate paratroopers. These paratroopers must carry personal weapons, protective equipment, other equipment, life support, etc. Everything that is needed in modern warfare cannot be carried far on the "navel", and all this is a big hindrance. After completing the mission, the landing party must return "to the base" to sleep and eat. This is the kind of war drawn by the military. Such a war is a war with the partisans. So, most countries need equipment to fight the partisans.
The vehicle I have described is intended for a war with a strong enemy. It would seem a contradiction (strong enemy, but weak combat vehicle). There is no contradiction. The question rests simultaneously on military tactics (first of all), but indirectly on economics. For the same amount, the state can buy one "super-duper" fancy armored car, or a flock of cheap two-seater combat vehicles. It is likely that the issue can be resolved comprehensively. But, light two-seater BM can significantly change tactics.
It was also proposed to sheathe the vehicles with "armored" sandwich panels, the main purpose of which is not to reflect a 7,62 or 5,45 bullet or a fragment, but to absorb its kinetic energy. These will be fairly easy targets for weapons 12,7 (and above), but the main goal of creating a machine is war, not ATO (by the way, in Ukraine, the year was just war, not ATO).

Frankly, all these jeep-like cars, in my opinion, are a cuckoo compared to an armored personnel carrier. Stand, like Gelenvagen, show-off, and patency, generally amateurish functionality. Created only for banana republics for money laundering. Earn armored personnel carriers, and all. In our steppes, an armored personnel carrier will never sit down. And his pros developed it.

      20 September 2016 01: 00
And what is your opinion based on ?? Maybe on the "high security" BTR-80? Which has neither even close armor nor mine protection. The permeability shown in the video in my opinion removes all the questions. Especially funny is the opinion that the pros did the armored personnel carrier, and the South African military-industrial complex, which develops equipment not on the basis of theories and calculations of some kind, but in military practice and in cooperation with other, no less experienced design bureaus such as Israeli, turn out to be dilettantes. Something I doubt that 8 + 8 armored personnel carriers will come out cheaper if it is raised to the same level of protection, especially its operation. And the level of DUBM must still be achieved.

Recently, armored cars are doing everything to whom not laziness. This is a purely police technique, as 7,62 mm caliber bullet protection is just ridiculous. The army needs an armored personnel carrier with an 8x8 or 6x6 wheel formula, otherwise you can get stuck in a mud. The axle load with a machine weight of about 17 tons is very large, so you can forget about cross-country ability at full load. What is the advantage of armored cars over armored personnel carriers, except for a better overview and lower price due to the use of civilian components?

You would still read the article before writing. A lot of hits 12,7mm NATO can withstand armored personnel carriers? I'm not talking about mines and IEDs.
