Poland announced the main battle tank PT-16

31
For several decades, the production of the main battle tank T-72 has become one of the most massive machines of its class in the world, and besides, it was repeatedly upgraded, which led to the emergence of a mass of various modifications. The development of the basic design was carried out both in our country and abroad, and this process does not stop until now. A few days ago it became known about the appearance of the next version of the update T-72. At this time, the Polish industry proposed its own development of armored vehicles. The modernization project was named PT-16.

The existence of a new project has become known thanks to the Polish television channel TVP1. 27 August channel showed a TV show on the latest Polish developments in the field of weapons and military equipment. Among other samples, a promising tracked infantry fighting vehicle and a new main battle tank, based on the existing design, were shown. Both promising armored vehicles are planned to be shown at the upcoming MSPO-2016 exhibition, which will open on September 6 in Kielce. A few days before the first public demonstration at the salon, promising developments were shown to journalists.

Reportedly, the main combat project tank PT-16 was developed by enterprises from the organization of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa SA It is interesting that the project was created on the initiative and at the expense of the authors. The project was developed by the Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Urządzeń Mechanicznych (OBRUM) design bureau. The construction of the experimental equipment was entrusted to the Zakłady Mechaniczne Bumar-Łabędy SA factory. Several other organizations were also involved in the project, whose task is to supply certain components. To date, all participants in a promising project have completed the tasks and made the first prototype of new equipment, which in the very near future will take part in the exhibition.

General view of the tank PT-16

According to reports, the PT-16 project is another development option for the main T-72 family tanks. Recall that during the time of the Warsaw Pact, the Polish industry received a license to manufacture Soviet-designed tanks. From 1979 to 1991, the order of 680 machines of the T-72, T-72М and T-72М1 versions was released. In the future, Polish specialists continued to develop licensed technology, resulting in the PT-91 Twardy project. A project for the modernization of tanks under the designation PT-72U was also developed. The latest attempt at the moment to improve the technique of Soviet development is the project PT-16, which has only reached the construction of a prototype.

The available data show that the PT-16 project allows for the modernization of both existing Soviet-made T-72M tanks and Polish PT-91. Regardless of the type of base technology, the machine should receive a significant number of new components, which, as expected by the authors of the project, will improve the basic characteristics and positively affect the combat qualities. The new project involves the revision of the hull and turret, the installation of new weapons and the modernization of electronic equipment. All these innovations should bring the characteristics of the machine to a new level.

The Polish military industry, represented by the authors of the PT-16 project, considered the protection of basic armored vehicles insufficient, resulting in the use of measures aimed at strengthening the hull and turret. It is proposed to install additional reservation modules for existing units designed to increase the resistance of the vehicle to anti-tank weapons of various classes. It is argued that after the update has been applied, the frontal projection of the vehicle will be resistant to cumulative projectiles equivalent to 1000 mm of homogeneous armor. This increase in booking has led to a noticeable change in the external lines of the car.

Armored car and one of its creators

Strengthening the frontal details of the hull led to the need to remove all units that were present on it initially. Directly on the existing upper frontal detail with a new project it is proposed to install blocks of combined armor 60 mm thick, designed to increase the level of protection. Additional protection consists of three relatively large panels, the composition of which is not specified. With their help, almost the entire frontal part of the hull is closed, with the exception of the areas around the driver's hatch and towing hooks. These units still remain on the base case, due to which certain parts of it cannot be closed with additional armor. A mud shield in the form of a small rectangular part is mounted on top of the additional reservation.

One of the most noticeable features of the modernization of the existing armored hull was the processing of fenders. Due to some technical factors, the front of these units received a different tilt angle, which is why a box-shaped unit of relatively great height appeared directly above the mudguards of the new design. When shooting a mock-up sample, you can see that there is a wide opening in this box, which, for example, can be used to install lighting equipment. Earlier headlights, etc. placed on the frontal parts of the body, and now they can be mounted in a new place.

To enhance the protection of the hull sides, additional elements of additional booking have been applied. Instead of the old rubber-metal side screens, the PT-16 tank gets stiff armor steel parts. However, some features of the new screens have become the reason for the assumptions that the additional side protection has a combined design. However, the characteristic appearance of the ends of the installed sheets may indicate the use of relatively simple parts. At the same time, this may be a feature of a prototype model of a simplified design, in the manufacture of which no armor and other "complex" materials were used. The screens of the new design completely cover the sides of the hull. In the vertical plane, they occupy a place from the top of the fences to the top of the road wheels. It is proposed to attach rubber sheets covering support rollers to their lower part.

PT-91 Twardy - one of the predecessors of PT-16

Noticeable alterations exposed tower modernized tank. On the existing unit it is also proposed to install a set of new accessories, designed to increase the level of protection, as well as changing the appearance of the product. The frontal projection of the old tower is covered with new units of complex shape with a frontal part consisting of several panels. There is also a forward inclined roof. The embrasure of the gun is covered with a mask with a relatively small hole for the withdrawal of the barrel. On top of the existing tower should also be installed side and aft units of new design, having a similar shape. After such an upgrade, the existing T-72 turret takes on a new look and takes on a complex shape made up of many straight panels. It is reported that after the upgrade, the level of protection of the tower corresponds to an improved body.

A curious feature of the PT-16 project that can raise certain issues is the lack of dynamic protection systems. The experience of operating armored vehicles of the last decades clearly shows the importance of such equipment of armored vehicles, however, for some inexplicable reason, a new Polish tank cannot receive such protection. A possible assumption about the incomplete assembly of a prototype, which has not yet received blocks of dynamic protection, is hardly true, since the machine shown simply does not have any fastenings or seats for such equipment.

According to reports, the modernization project involves a slight increase in the mobility of the machine, due to the use of a new engine. At the same time, an increase in the power of the power plant may be due to the need to compensate for the increased combat mass. One way or another, it is proposed to equip the PT-16 tank with a Serbian engine that develops power up to the 1000 HP. The machine was probably equipped with a V-46TK product. You should also use a new transmission, designed for increased loads.

Chassis basic technology decided to leave unchanged. On each side there are six road wheels with individual torsion bar suspension. In addition, the first, second, and sixth pairs of rollers must retain existing paddle dampers. The drive wheels are still placed in the aft of the hull, the guides in the front. The design of the caterpillar, apparently, also should not change.

Upper frontal hull detail with extra armor. The window for the tow hook is visible

The new project has implemented a proposal to replace weapons with new systems that meet NATO standards. Instead of the 125-mm smooth-bore gun used on all previous modifications of the T-72 tank, it is now proposed to use the 120 mm caliber system. The new gun was developed by Huta Stalowa Wola SA based on the 120-mm cannon of the German company Rheinmetall. With this change, the armament complex is supposed to ensure complete unification with the Leopard 2 tanks in service with the Polish army, as well as to comply with the requirements of the standards of the North Atlantic Alliance. As reported, the PT-16 tank can use all existing 120-mm unitary shots of various types.

A new project provides for the installation of a niche for the storage of ammunition in a mechanized installation on the tower. To speed up the loading process and improve the combat performance, it was proposed to equip the PT-16 tank with an automatic loader. Since NATO standards stipulate the use of 120 mm caliber unitary shots, Polish specialists had to re-develop all the necessary mechanisms. Borrowing ideas in the original project of the T-72 tank was not possible, since the Soviet / Russian tank guns use separate loading.

With the new instrument it is proposed to use a modern fire control system based on digital equipment, optical-electronic systems, etc. At the same time, however, some questions may arise regarding the composition of such equipment. The fact is that the prototype model of the tower, shown by Polish television, did not receive any covers of the sights, holes for their installation, etc. Thus, a number of key features of the fire control system cannot yet be reliably established based on the available data. Perhaps the answers to the questions will appear during the official "premiere" of the tank.

Additional booking of the frontal part of the tower

To expand the field of observation, the crew are invited to use several blocks of additional optical-electronic equipment placed on different parts of the tower. Each unit has three cameras with which it will be possible to monitor the situation. However, traditional periscopic devices, located on the hatches of the crew, are also preserved.

The composition of the advanced armament of a prospective tank is determined in accordance with current trends in the field of armored vehicles. To the right of the main gun, on some mounts with it, is mounted a coaxial rifle caliber machine gun. To combat unprotected targets, it is also proposed to use a machine gun mounted on a combat module. A ZSDU Kobuz system capable of carrying machine guns of various types, including large-caliber, should be installed on the roof of the turret. The module has special equipment necessary for control from a remote console installed in the workplace of one of the crew members. On the stern niche of the tower are 12 smoke grenade launchers.

The dimensions and combat weight of the upgraded PT-16 tank have not yet been clarified. The need to equip the base tank T-72 / PT-91 with a number of new products, including those with a large enough weight, suggests a noticeable increase in the mass of the armored vehicle. In this regard, there may be questions about the mobility provided by the 1000-strong engine. The new power plant may not cope with an unacceptable increase in the weight of the structure, because of which the driving characteristics may deteriorate compared to the base samples.

General view of the tower and guns

According to reports, the company Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa SA developed a new project for the modernization of armored vehicles on its own initiative and at its own expense. The design work took about six months, after which the plant Zakłady Mechaniczne Bumar-ęabędy SA began assembling a prototype. As the relatively recent video shows, Polish specialists have already completed the construction of a tank demonstrator, which in the near future will have to convince potential customers of the need to purchase such equipment.

Being a prototype model, a recently built tank has a number of characteristic features. So, he has not yet received the full set of required equipment and weapons. Also, instead of real armor could use other materials, characterized by lower cost and greater ease of processing. Thus, the built machine can only show the main provisions of the project, as well as demonstrate driving performance. Firing at targets with the use of one or another weaponsseems to be impossible. Fully demonstrate all their capabilities, as well as participate in the tests can only real prototypes, which may be built in the future.

The real prospects of the new project PT-16 have not yet been determined. The Ministry of Defense of Poland has repeatedly said about the abandonment of plans to modernize T-72 / PT-91 tanks. The development of the armored vehicle fleet is planned to be carried out by other methods and means, primarily through the purchase of new equipment. In this case, the prospects for the PT-16 project in the context of the development of the Polish army are very vague, if at all real.

ZSDU Kobuz Battle Module with 7,62-mm Machine Gun

Nevertheless, the project of modernization of the existing equipment can find application in the form of foreign contracts. T-72 family tanks are in service with more than four dozen countries, and in some cases, the old issue vehicles are still morally and physically obsolete. Thus, Polish designers of armored vehicles can try to offer their new project to foreign customers who are not able to buy modern tanks, but who want to upgrade the material part of their troops.

At the moment, the tank PT-16 exists only in the form of a single prototype model, intended for display at various exhibitions. Information about the possible construction of full-fledged prototypes has not yet been received. Thus, at the moment, a promising project is in its early stages: the tests have not yet begun, and the calculated characteristics of the equipment have not been confirmed. As a result, it’s too early to talk about the real prospects of the updated tanks of old models. In addition, there is reason to doubt the very possibility of bringing a new project to the construction of experimental equipment. The Polish industry already has the sad experience of developing projects and building mock-up samples that have no real prospects and remain for years at the stage of exhibition shows.

However, the available information about the new Polish project allows us to make some estimates and make assumptions. There is reason to believe that the proposed upgrade can really improve the performance of the armored vehicle in comparison with the base tanks of the T-72 family of old versions. The installation of an additional reservation, the use of an enhanced engine and, in particular, modern electronic equipment can have a positive impact on tactical and technical characteristics of the equipment.

Block of cameras of the additional review

At the same time, the preservation of a number of existing components and assemblies may impose serious restrictions on the growth characteristics. In particular, the preservation of the chassis will not significantly increase the mobility without loss in the resource units, and updating the armor hull without a major alteration does not allow for a significant increase in the level of protection. As a result, in some characteristics, an upgraded tank must surpass the base machines, while in others it is unlikely to be able to show something new.

An attempt to modernize the T-72 / PT-91 tanks could lead to a noticeable increase in the basic indicators and gain superiority over the equipment of the base models. At the same time, updated cars will not be able to compete with newer types of equipment created in recent years. Apparently, the improvements used will allow the PT-16 tank to reach the level of the Russian T-90, which is also a deep modernization of the T-72. Attempts to compete with newer technology, right up to the newest T-14 tank, are doomed to failure for objective reasons.

To date, the project PT-16 has passed the stage of development work and is already embodied in the form of a mock-up sample, designed to demonstrate new ideas and solutions. Full-scale prototypes are not yet available, and the possibility of their construction for various reasons at the moment may be the subject of controversy. The question of the future prospects of the new project will be decided in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, the authors of the modernization project are preparing for the first official public display of the new sample. September 6 in Kielce should open the exhibition MSPO-2016, which once again will be the first platform to showcase the latest developments of the Polish defense industry.

What is most striking is that they present Tvyards as their own development! They are silent about the fact that this is just a good old T-72 in a new shell ... In the spirit of ukrovoyaks who extol the modernization of the T-64 as the "best" tank in the world)))

There are various types of linkages ... The fact that they hung on this nedotank (additional reservation) - looks unfinished and impractical. Damaged mounted armor blocks must either be repaired or replaced. It is difficult to repair them due to the heterogeneous structure. Change is expensive due to the large size of the blocks. It turns out the product is cheaper to manufacture, but much more expensive to repair.

Given all the alterations, this can not be called a modernization of the T-72. This is still a new tank, the creation of which was taken as the basis for the T-72.

A good article is when the second time about the same thing .... Until Poland itself takes this tank into service, there will be no success. The situation as with OPLOT. Western countries do not need it, and in the east there is a lot of competition with Russia and China. I don’t presume to compare the pros and cons of competitors now, but Russia and China make tanks independently on their own and export from them is also independent, And from Poland? Poland decides to put the tank in Syria (for example), the tank will be left without an engine, armor, guns, or whatever else.

In my opinion, with extra bookings, they got it soundly. As for the rest, it is difficult to judge so far, but there are reasonable thoughts. In fact, it was a project to modernize precisely Polish tanks. And while they don’t really test their tanks, modernized under this project, nobody will need this from foreign customers for nothing. Here the motives of the lords are not clear, to bungle something "from what happened" ... A modern tank is a complex of high-tech equipment .. Before you start to fence something, you still need to calculate and estimate "can we pull?" Otherwise, something incomprehensible-funny comes out (see "dung" from the great peremogy)
